There are so many bars near Hwagok Station. Jeonyeokhanjan Hwagok Station Branch was a quiet, comfortable one.

They have unique snacks like gamtae gimbap (seaweed rice roll with sea mustard) and a nice range of traditional liquors including potato liquor, so it works both as a dinner spot and a place for a drink — it has that hideout feeling.

It wasn't loud or chaotic, so it was great for enjoying a calm evening.

A quiet secret hideout, Jeonyeokhanjan Hwagok Station Branch

Around Hwagok Station in the evening, it's lively with people getting off work. Jeonyeokhanjan is just a short walk from the main road into the alley, but the moment you step into that alley, the mood surprisingly changes.

Outside was busy and full of people, but around the shop it was quiet and calm. I visited around 6pm and got in right away with no wait.

Seating and group sizes at Jeonyeokhanjan Hwagok Station Branch
The space itself is a bit small. It's a cozy, calm space, which I liked.
Seating ranges from single seats to 4-person tables. There's a bar table, open-window terrace seats, and 2–4 person hall tables — quite a variety of formats.
If you rearrange tables, seating up to 8 seems possible, so if you're planning a group gathering, it might be worth asking ahead. Since the shop isn't huge, I imagine you could book it out with a smaller group than you'd expect.
What does the gamjasul potato liquor welcome drink taste like?
Welcome drink: gamjasul (potato liquor)

As soon as I sat down, they brought out the welcome drink.

It's called gamjasul (potato liquor), and it had a faint potato aroma along with a sweet taste.

Turns out it's a traditional liquor fermented from Gangwon-do potatoes. It was my first time trying it, and it was easy and pleasant to sip.

Jeonyeokhanjan Hwagok Station Branch has quite a variety of traditional liquors, so it's worth going to try a few different kinds.
Hanpan makguksu bossam: how big is the portion and how does it taste?
Generous portions and delicious hanpan makguksu bossam

For the main dish, I ordered the hanpan makguksu bossam, and it was more filling and tastier than I expected.

The bossam pork was boiled well through, very tender, and had no off flavor.
There was also odolppyeo (soft cartilage), and even that was tender. I usually don't like odolppyeo and pick it all out, but here I ate every bit of it.

The bossam tastes even better with the chive salad or the makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) served alongside — and the makguksu was seriously incredible.

The noodles were really chewy and the sauce was delicious.

The sauce was tangy with a deep savory flavor — honestly the best makguksu I've had in a while.

I wish they'd add makguksu as a standalone dish or an add-on option. The soft texture of the bossam and the chewy noodles were genuinely a perfect match.

The crisp, fresh chive salad also went really well with the bossam and I enjoyed it a lot. There was so much meat that the noodles and chive salad ran out first, and surprisingly, the caprese ended up pairing well with the bossam too.
The caprese served alongside the bossam
Fresh and refreshing: caprese

The caprese is tomato, whole mozzarella, and basil with a tangy sauce, and it worked like a salad on the table.

The tomato was cool and refreshing, so eating it between bites cleaned up my palate nicely.
The savory cheese and tangy sauce were also a great combination.

It felt like bossam and caprese could basically be bundled into a set menu.
