There is so much food at Namdaemun Market! This time I tried something called peanut bread (ttangkong-ppang, a small peanut-shaped baked snack). It's super cheap, and since everything is handmade it tastes really mild and clean. There are no preservatives, so you can't stockpile it. I recommend buying just what you'll eat.
Where is Daesin Ttangkong-ppang in Namdaemun Market?
Daesin Ttangkong-ppang Namdaemun Market branch (대신땅콩빵 남대문시장점) is inside Namdaemun Market. The market has everything from sit-down restaurants to street snacks, so just wandering around is fun. While looking around, I stopped by Daesin and bought peanut bread, peanut butter and egg bread.

How much is peanut bread at Daesin Ttangkong-ppang?
The peanut bread is incredibly cheap: 20 pieces for ₩3,000, 45 pieces for ₩6,000, and 80 pieces for ₩10,000. These days even a single snack often costs a lot, so at this price you can totally flex!

What Daesin peanut bread with whole peanuts tastes like
There are whole peanuts inside the peanut bread, so it looks different from the usual, and you really taste that nutty flavor. It isn't just peanut-flavored. Real peanuts give it a chew and make it very rich and savory. If you like peanuts, pack up a box and eat it lightly whenever a snack craving hits.

Dipping peanut bread in Daesin's handmade creamy peanut butter
I bought the creamy peanut butter thinking of the peanut jam you spread on sandwich bread.

It has no preservatives at all, and it's handmade, with peanuts ground in the shop by machine.

It's very thick and the natural nuttiness really comes through. I scooped a big spoonful and dipped the peanut bread in it, and the savory flavor doubled.

The taste isn't harsh, so even eating the peanut butter straight off the spoon doesn't feel heavy. After a few bites, it's surprisingly filling too.

What does Daesin's egg bread taste like?
The egg bread (gyeran-ppang, a small baked bread with a whole egg) really tasted of egg.

It isn't made with beaten egg. The yolk keeps its shape inside, and it was really delicious. It's seasoned with salt inside, so it's pleasantly salty, just right.

Personally, the egg bread was totally my thing.

Peanut smoothie next time, and a peanut memory
Daesin also has a peanut smoothie, so I'll try that next time. It sounds really nutty and tasty. When I was little we often boiled peanuts at home, but as I grew up I rarely ate them.

But tasting peanuts in so many different ways brought back memories, which was nice. Above all, after eating only salty, intense snacks, a mild and healthy snack like this was a welcome change.
Why Daesin peanut bread appeals: mild flavor and low prices

The snacks at Daesin Ttangkong-ppang Namdaemun Market branch let the ingredients' own flavor shine. The peanut bread tastes of whole peanuts, and I liked the peanut butter's mild, characteristic peanut flavor too. If you prefer nutty flavors to intense or overly sweet snacks, I highly recommend it! The prices are easy on the wallet, too.

I bought three things, peanut bread, egg bread and peanut butter, and it still came to under ₩10,000. That's the charm of a traditional market, I guess.

Daesin's tasting corner, and why some may find it plain
Daesin Ttangkong-ppang Namdaemun Market branch has a tasting corner, so if peanut bread is new to you, you can try it before buying. Many people bought right after tasting. There were foreign customers too. If you're used to salty, sweet, spicy, MSG-heavy flavors, it might taste a little plain, but if you like nutty, mild flavors, Daesin's snacks should suit you well.

When to stop at Daesin while exploring Namdaemun Market
There are plenty of good restaurants around Namdaemun Market, so it's a great stop after a nice meal, when your mouth gets bored while browsing the market. This was my first time ever encountering peanut bread, and it felt really fresh. It's freshly made, so eating it right after buying is warm and even tastier.

The packaging is neat, so it works as a gift too, and it's easy to snack on during a walk. If you're heading to Namdaemun Market, drop by Daesin Ttangkong-ppang Namdaemun Market branch!
