Thick sashimi don and ilpumdong lunch in Yeouido: Ilpum Yeouido Branch

In short

Ilpum Yeouido Branch is a Japanese sushi and sashimi-don restaurant in the basement of the Anwon Building on Eunhaeng-ro in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. This visit's order was the ilpumdong (special) at ₩30,000 and the special sashimi-don at ₩39,000, served with chawanmushi, cold udon, and a pudding dessert. The thick-cut aged sashimi and generous portions made it a reliably satisfying lunch in Yeouido.

A Yeouido restaurant recommendation for sushi — my review of the special sashimi don and ilpumdong at Ilpum Yeouido Branch.

When I want good sushi or a sashimi-don bowl in Yeouido, Ilpum Yeouido Branch is one of the first places that comes to mind. I've visited many times, and every visit leaves me satisfied, so it's a Yeouido restaurant I keep coming back to.

Yeouido has a lot of office workers, so lunch and dinner hours are always busy. Even so, I like that Ilpum Yeouido Branch has a bigger dining room than other branches, so you can eat in relative comfort.

This time I ordered the ilpumdong (special) for ₩30,000 and the special sashimi don for ₩39,000.

Warm clear soup and chawanmushi

Starting with warm clear soup and chawanmushi

After ordering, warm clear soup (jangguk) and chawanmushi (savory egg custard) come out first. The soup isn't heavy but has a clean umami that wakes up your appetite, and the chawanmushi is so moist it spreads softly the moment you dip in a spoon. A gentle egg savoriness rises up, making it an easy, unfussy start before the main meal. Honestly, this kind of care with the basics is one of the reasons I like Ilpum.

The Yeouido must-try: special sashimi don

The special sashimi don grabs your attention the moment it arrives. It's a rice bowl generously topped with a variety of aged sashimi — sea bream, flounder, seasonal fish, yellowtail, salmon, tuna and more — so it's visually striking from the start. What impressed me most was the thickness of the fish. Instead of thin slices, it's cut into big, thick pieces, so there's real chewing satisfaction.

The sea bream had a subtle sweetness and chewy texture, while the flounder was light and clean. The yellowtail carried a deep, savory fattiness, and the salmon was soft and rich. The tuna in particular had deep umami and flavor — it was one of the most satisfying parts of the meal. Being aged sashimi, the flavor built up the more I chewed, and with wasabi the fish's natural sweetness came through even more clearly.

The signature dish: ilpumdong

Ilpumdong (special) generously topped with sea urchin

Ilpumdong is another signature dish that draws a lot of people in. It's built on a base of savory minced tuna negitoro, topped generously with salmon roe and sea urchin, so it looks rich and abundant at a glance. The softly minced tuna negitoro melts in your mouth, and the salmon roe pops with each bite, adding a salty umami.

Adding the sea urchin deepens the flavor even further. Its ocean aroma isn't overpowering, and its sweet, creamy taste pairs really well with the tuna.

Wrapping it in the gamtae (dried seaweed) and gim (roasted seaweed) served alongside doubles the savoriness and makes it even more enjoyable.

A hearty set that even comes with cold udon

Cold udon served as part of the set

Ilpum Yeouido Branch also serves cold udon as part of the set. The springy noodles and cool broth clean your palate, and eating some in between bites of sashimi helps you appreciate its flavor even more. Above all, the portion is very generous. The sashimi and rice alone would be plenty, but with the cold udon added on top, you finish the meal without a hint of regret. It was satisfying enough that I felt the price was well worth it.

Finishing with a sweet pudding

The meal always ends with a dessert pudding I look forward to. The soft, sweet pudding cleans up your palate and wraps up the meal perfectly. It's a small dessert, but it adds a lot to how satisfied you feel at the end.

If you're looking for a great sushi or sashimi-don restaurant in Yeouido, Ilpum Yeouido Branch is a choice that never disappoints, no matter when you go. Fresh aged sashimi, hearty portions, and clean service all came together well. Maybe that's why every visit leaves me thinking, 'I need to come back again' — it's a Yeouido restaurant that keeps pulling me in.
