Chuseok pie set at a Hwangnidan-gil dessert shop: Gyeongju Tokyo Pie

In short

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is an apple pie bakery near Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, where Japanese owners bake everything on site. As the first stop of a two-day walking trip around Gyeongju, the writer took away a Chuseok edition gift set of 6 pies (4 apple, 1 red bean, 1 chocolate) for 26,500 won. The sweetness is clean rather than syrupy, and a frozen pie tastes freshly baked again after 7 minutes in an air fryer at 180°C.

What kind of bakery is Gyeongju Tokyo Pie?

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is a place in Gyeongju where you can try Tokyo-style apple pie made directly by Japanese owners. And get this — it's not too sweet, it's actually kind of luxurious.

Hi, I'm MEMO. I came to Gyeongju for a one-night, two-day walking trip. After getting off the KTX at Gyeongju Station and taking a bus, this was the very first place I visited — Gyeongju Tokyo Pie!!!!

A friend told me the pies here aren't sweet and taste luxurious, so I came all the way to Gyeongju, thinking 'Tokyo pie, what now?' — curious, I gave it a try.

That wood interior I've been eyeing lately~~ I want a kitchen just like this...! I've never been to Tokyo, but this place really has that Tokyo vibe, haha!

How is the Tokyo apple pie made by owners who love Gyeongju so much? First off, they use really delicious Gyeongbuk apples. Apples are basically worth their weight in gold these days... the apple flesh is genuinely sweet.

Inside Gyeongju Tokyo Pie: the Chuseok red bean pie and packaging

Both owners of Gyeongju Tokyo Pie were so kind. They said they'd prepared a Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) gift set this time too. The Chuseok edition red bean flavor!

They pack it into this pretty box, and the pamphlet explaining how to eat it was really lovely.

I picked this Chuseok gift set flavor this time.

Open it up and there it is!!!!! Gyeongju Tokyo Pie, packed full of happiness. This is genuinely, genuinely delicious. What do you think of the Chuseok gift set?

How does the no-syrup apple pie taste?

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie's apple pie has a clean, upscale sweetness that doesn't drip with syrup. I really love apple pie, but usually it's chopped apple bits drowning in sticky syrup, isn't it?

You can tell just by looking — you only taste the fruit's natural sweetness, right? A clean, upscale flavor without dripping syrup.

You really have to try this...! Are there desserts this good in Tokyo, everyone?! If so... I want to go to Tokyo too.

How to store and reheat Gyeongju Tokyo Pie pies

Gyeongju Tokyo Pie can be frozen, so I probably could've bought a ton more. I still have one left in my freezer, and they said half-thawing it then air frying at 180°C for 7 minutes brings back that fresh-baked taste, so I'm going to give it a try.

Pie reheated in the air fryer

I just ran it through the air fryer while writing this post and — wow!!! I want to buy more, ugh. It really recreates that fresh-baked pie taste. The chocolate flavor is so luxurious. And the red bean filling isn't sweet at all?!! Everyone, please, please air-fry these before you eat them.

Check out the menu board. I bought the gift set because the composition was so good. It'd make a thoughtful Chuseok gift too — the set is red bean + apple pie + chocolate.

Store event notice with an Americano

There are so many events, which makes it fun to join in. The Naver receipt review even gets you an Americano ☕️ I had one too, and the beans were nutty and paired well with the pie!

Why Gyeongju Tokyo Pie is worth a stop near Hwangnidan-gil

There are really so many desserts in Hwangnidan-gil, but they're all so sweet that you get sick of eating much. It was really surprising that even the next day, there was zero browning on the apples when I took them out.

If you like an upscale, refined sweetness like I do, give Gyeongju Tokyo Pie a try as a Hwangnidan-gil dessert stop — and pick up a gift set while you're at it. Recommended :)
