Hongdae bakery, best time to go for bread: Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam
In short
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a takeout bakery in Seodaemun, Seoul, near Yeonnam-dong and Hongdae, known for its moist garlic baguette. On this tenth visit, timed for 11:00–13:00, Mandong Jegwa had the fullest shelves the blogger had seen yet, and the haul was Emmental, cappuccino bread, salty soboro and the signature garlic baguette. Mandong Jegwa has no seating and sells takeout only, but you can reserve the breads you want in advance, so a midday visit beats an evening one.

Today's post: my review of Mandong Jegwa, the Yeonnam-dong bakery I've now visited more than ten times, a legit Hongdae favorite. Even though its Superchart tier dropped, this is a bread spot worth eating at even if I have to pay out of my own pocket sometimes.
It's known for garlic baguettes and bagels, famous enough that it's always mentioned when people talk about Hongdae bakeries. Seriously, I see people heading back to Incheon after a day in Hongdae carrying a Mandong Jegwa shopping bag lol. That's how well-known it is. Today I finally grabbed the garlic baguette again — it's been so long since I had that soft, moist, floppy garlic baguette. 🧄🥖🖤
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch: hours and basics
- ⏱️ Hours: 11:00 - 21:00
- ✅ Famous for the moist garlic baguette
- ✅ You can reserve specific breads ahead of time
- 🅿️ Parking: not available
Where is Mandong Jegwa, is there parking, and can you eat in?
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is on the main road, right as you come in toward the gas station from the Hongdae Donggyo-dong intersection — there's a huge sign that just says BREAD!!!! There's no dedicated parking, so you have to stop briefly in the alley and grab your bread quickly.

There's an original location in front of Gangneung Jungang Market, and this Yeonnam branch is the second store — it's super popular. Whenever I come to Hongdae twice, I end up here once.
This is a takeout store, so eating in isn't allowed. But if you go to the Ediya next door and order drinks matching your headcount, you can legally eat your bread there haha. Also, on weekday evenings the shelves are often nearly empty, so you can reserve ahead of time! If there's a specific bread you really want, reservation is a must.
Why 11:00–13:00 is the best time to go for bread
Mandong Jegwa has the most bread around 11am to 1pm. Out of the ten-plus times I've visited, this was the day with the most bread left, and it made me so happy haha.

Here's what the inside looks like. While you're picking out bread, a staff member comes over and cuts a piece for you to taste. Then of course you end up buying it — because everything is delicious!
What bread does Mandong Jegwa sell? The Yeonnam-dong and Hongdae lineup

⏩️⏩️⏩️ There was an unusually huge variety this day. Come on a weekday afternoon and nothing is missing!! In the evenings it's always half-empty, so going early was so worth it haha.
My favorites are the bacon ciabatta, two kinds of bagels, the garlic baguette, the Emmental 'bottom' roll, and the pretzel. I've never had a miss here. But if I could only buy a few things, I'd go for the garlic baguette, the basil tomato bagel, and the onion bagel.
Emmental, cappuccino bread and salty soboro: how they tasted
They seem to give you a cooler bag for the cream-filled breads. That's never happened before, but when I bought the cappuccino bread this time, that's what I got.
This Emmental one — the salty cheddar cheese is insane...!! I used to love the maple one, but now I like Emmental even more. It's salty enough that kids would love it.
Half bread, half cheese.
The cappuccino bread is basically a mocha cream bread. It feels similar to the trendy white rolls these days, but with way more cream packed in.
The salty soboro, hollow inside, tasted similar to salt bread to me. If you microwave it, the buttery pocket gets even better.

The signature super-moist garlic baguette
Mandong Jegwa's signature is the moist, soaked garlic baguette. There's so much garlic butter sauce that the bread is basically drenched. So instead of a crisp baguette texture, it's chewy and soft. Definitely a calorie bomb lol.
But it's delicious enough that I get why it's the signature. If you come to Mandong Jegwa, the garlic baguette is a must!! If you haven't tried this Yeonnam-dong bakery and Hongdae favorite, you have to try it!! Nothing here is the usual cream bun, red bean bread, or plain white loaf — everything is original, so it's the kind of bread you can only get at this one place. Highly recommend!!
