Arriving at Ugly, a second-round bar near Gangnam Station

Ugly is exactly the right bar for a light second round in Gangnam. I visited once before and was so satisfied I came back again! The moment the elevator doors open, it feels like stepping into another world — kind of Harry Potter-ish, kind of like walking into a tarot shop hahahahaha

Even the waiting area is full of atmosphere. That teal interior somehow adds a sense of mystery, and the lighting all felt kind of medieval(?) The concept is really clear.

The kick of Ugly is this ceiling design! You can see constellations even indoors. I've been to a lot of bars but Ugly is the only one with an interior like this.

Lying under a dim, star-filled night sky really makes it easy to just melt into the seat... Doesn't the vibe feel amazing?

Second-floor seats and private rooms at Ugly

The table setup was varied — there was a 2nd floor and rooms too. Seems perfect for a private time. Anyway, I'm coveting those 2nd floor seats... Next time I have to sit at that table. Sitting there, seeing the ceiling up close and looking down at the bar would feel amazing.

Is the rooftop terrace full on an autumn evening?

And Ugly's other space — the rooftop terrace! To enjoy the short autumn season, we grabbed a spot on the terrace. Seems like everyone else had the same idea, because the terrace seats were completely full.

Once you sit down, you get this street view(?) right in the middle of Gangnam. In bustling Gangnam, a space like this feels precious. And even those lights look like stars.

Ugly's hand-illustrated menu, like an art book

Ugly's menu — not a kiosk, but a little booklet. I love that analog feel.

Every menu item has its own illustration, which gave it a uniqueness only Ugly has. It was really nice to reference while choosing a drink too haha It felt less like a menu and more like flipping through an art book. You could tell a lot of care went into every detail.

What we ordered: Sidecar 24,000 won and Peach Crush 16,000 won

Order: Sidecar - ₩24,000 Peach Crush - ₩16,000 We'd already eaten a full meal beforehand, so we went light and just ordered cocktails. The basic snack was pretzels, munch munch. The Sidecar was bright and citrusy but you could still taste the liquor's bitterness, and the Peach Crush was more like a sweet soft drink.

Where can you smoke hookah at Ugly?

Ugly has a lot going on. Hookah is available at the outdoor terrace seats. Not possible indoors, though. There were actually quite a few tables smoking hookah out on the terrace.

When is Ugly worth a visit?

When you want a light cocktail after a meal, or when you want to spend some time alone — Ugly seems like a great spot for either. Oh, and since the atmosphere is so good, it also looks great for a blind date or the early stages of dating. There's a lot of blind dating happening in Gangnam, you know. Coming here would probably boost the success rate haha
