Today, I visited Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada (제철담은 마포바다), a newly opened sashimi restaurant right by Daeheung Station! Since it has just opened, the interior is clean and there is an opening event going on. More than anything, the seafood quality was great, so I definitely recommend it if you are looking for a spot in Mapo for a family gathering or work dinner~! 🐟

Walk about 50 m from Exit 3 of Daeheung Station and you will spot Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada right away. 🅿️ Parking is not available, so I recommend walking or taking public transportation.

Maybe because shrimp season runs from September through November, salt-grilled live shrimp is currently one of the main seasonal dishes!

There was an aquarium outside the restaurant, filled with fresh fish for sashimi and seafood ✨

The dining room stretches far inside, with plenty of tables even for groups. It has not been open for long, but it was already bustling with customers 👏

Mapo Bada Signature Set for four

Mapo Bada Signature Set table spread

The food arrives all at once across this big tabletop~!

Set spread across a large table

I liked that everything was laid out at once, so it did not feel hectic, haha.

Soy sauce and cho-gochujang sauce containers

Even the sauce containers for soy sauce and cho-gochujang, a sweet-and-tangy red chili sauce, were kept clean since the kitchen manages them~! Now, I put some cho-gochujang and soy sauce on my small plate and got properly started 😆

Assorted sashimi with a varied selection

A full platter of Mapo Bada assorted sashimi, prepared with fresh selections from fish such as flounder, red sea bream, rockfish, sea bass, and jeomseongeo.

This time there was gizzard shad sashimi and raw shrimp too, both in peak season in autumn (September–November). The gizzard shad was nutty and the shrimp was wonderfully springy. Sashimi really is best in season 👏 Lettuce wraps were ready too, so I piled on two slices of fish and enjoyed a big mouthful~!

There were 18 shrimp in total, so it was really generous—and easily the most delicious grilled shrimp I have had lately.

It was on a completely different level from the frozen cocktail shrimp I eat when cooking something quick at home.

If you set the shrimp heads aside while eating, they will fry them up and bring them back with a rich buttery aroma. I never understood why people ate shrimp heads, but with tartar sauce, they were the perfect beer snack!

I love sea squirts, so I really enjoyed these fresh ones. It was my first time having raw scallop here, and wow... scallops really have to be eaten as sashimi. They were so nutty, mild, and tender that scallops might become my favorite seafood 😋

You all know that nutty, chewy taste of sannakji (live octopus) drizzled with sesame oil, right?

Opening-event draft beer

Oh! Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada even gives you draft beer as part of its opening event. We brought the car, so I was the only one who had a glass, but since it is newly opened, the beer machine was new too—the draft beer foam was a work of art 🍻

Sushi, grilled gizzard shad, and sides

The aroma of autumn gizzard shad grilling—the smell they say can even bring a daughter-in-law who left home back~

Grilled autumn gizzard shad

I cannot eat gizzard shad because of all the bones, but my husband said, “Why don’t you eat something this delicious?” and was happy to eat it all himself, haha.

The sides included bossam (boiled pork wraps), kimchi, and dried shredded radish. When you are eating only sashimi, you can start craving meat, so this was a surprisingly nice treat in the middle. I also liked the soft steamed egg that arrived nice and hot.

The fried sides you would miss at a sashimi restaurant came in three kinds—shrimp, sweet pumpkin, and croquettes—and all three were crispy and delicious.

With abalone porridge and miyeokguk (seaweed soup), both great before the meal, plus three kinds of banchan (Korean side dishes), the Mapo Bada Signature Set was so generous that it was hard to capture everything in photos.
