Yongsan bunsik restaurant with friends from New York: Hyeonseonine
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a bunsik (Korean snack food) restaurant on Yongridan-gil in Yongsan, Seoul, within walking distance of both Sinyongsan Station and Yongsan Station. Meeting up in Korea with friends first made in New York, the writer put a phone number into the waiting list at the entrance and shared the Hyeonseon Combo Set at medium spice — tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), gimbap (seaweed rice rolls), fritters and fish cake. Medium turned out hotter than Shin Ramyun, but the value and flavour at Hyeonseonine were good enough for a 100% return visit.

Where is Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch? A Yongridan-gil bunsik spot near Yongsan and Sinyongsan Stations

I stopped by Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, a well-known spot on Yongridan-gil. It's easy to reach from Yongsan Station — a transfer hub for Line 1 and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line — as well as from Sinyongsan Station on Line 4. It's popular enough to have a wait. I went with friends I hadn't seen in a while, and I was thoroughly happy with the visit. Great value too.

What we ordered at Hyeonseonine: the Hyeonseon Combo Set
Here's the menu board for reference. As you can see there's plenty of variety, and we went with the Hyeonseon Combo Set. It felt like great value for money, and now I want to come back and try the other menu items too. Prices across the board are pretty reasonable.

And here come today's stars. The tteokbokki (spicy stir-fried rice cakes), gimbap (seaweed rice roll), fried snacks and fish cake all looked amazing — just looking at the photos makes my mouth water again. We dug in immediately. One bite and you understand exactly why this place is so popular.

Tteokbokki and fish cake with friends from New York, reunited in Seoul
I came here with friends this time — people I met in New York over the summer, now reunited in Korea after a while apart. Tteokbokki is basically Korea's soul food, so it was the obvious choice, and it was the right call. The fish cake had incredible depth of flavor, addictive enough that you keep reaching for more. Hyeonseonine has gotten really popular lately and apparently has several branches — I've been to the Yongsan and Yeouido locations myself, and as far as I know Yongsan is the original.

The fried snacks were also delicious — my friend from Nonsan who came along especially praised them. They're great on their own or dipped in the tteokbokki sauce. A really well-put-together combo, I thought. Sundae (Korean blood sausage), tteokbokki, and fried snacks are a classic pairing that needs no explanation. We'd been at a festival earlier that day and came here in the evening — the food was so good it made me forget the day's fatigue.

How the wait works at Hyeonseonine: phone number first, then 3 minutes to arrive
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is popular, and busy not just with dine-in guests but with takeout and delivery too — delivery riders were bustling around the whole time I was there. I did have to wait, but it's worth it. You just enter your phone number at the entrance and wait; once called, you need to arrive within 3 minutes. Yongsan has always been a crowded area, but lately Yongridan-gil in particular draws even more people. It's a nice place for a walk before or after a meal, and there are good cafés nearby too. Since it's Yongsan, it's also convenient for meeting friends visiting from out of town — I ate tteokbokki with my friend and then saw them off at the KTX for Nonsan. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

I came all the way from Incheon and had zero regrets — the bunsik dishes were great, and they went well with beer and other drinks too. My friend from Argentina ordered a beer. It was a great time catching up with friends after a while apart. The food is good and the vibe is hip. I'd recommend it as a date spot too.

The staff at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch were also friendly, which made the visit even better. I came all the way from Incheon and the round trip was absolutely worth it.

Hyeonseonine opening hours and how to pick your spice level
Business hours are as follows: 11:00 to 24:00, with last order at 22:40.

We ordered the tteokbokki at medium spice, and medium is actually spicier than Shin Ramyun. If you're sensitive to spice, I'd recommend going mild instead.

That wraps up my review of Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch on Yongridan-gil. Check Naver Maps for the exact location — my intent to revisit is 100 percent.
