It had been a while since I’d gone out for tasty skewers and a drink with a friend after work, so we visited Yakitori Shomong Mapo Station Branch 🍻✨

Yakitori Shomong Mapo Station Branch visited after work

We were only going to have a light yakitori meal, but we properly ordered vongole sake-steamed clams and yakisoba too, then left completely full hahaha. I really wanted to introduce this spot to anyone looking for good Japanese food around Gongdeok Station with a great atmosphere!

An easy walk from Mapo Station

It’s on the first floor at 26 Dohwa-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, about 265 m from Exit 3 of Mapo Station. It was a quick walk from the station, so it was easy to choose as an after-work meeting spot 🚶🏻♀️

It’s also reasonably accessible from Gongdeok, so I think it would be a nice visit for anyone looking for Japanese food or an izakaya around Gongdeok!

A Gongdeok izakaya with warm wood tones

Inside, the space had a warm, wood-toned feel, and the soft lighting made it feel a little like stepping into an izakaya in Japan.

It wasn’t overly loud or hectic, so it was lovely for talking slowly with a friend while eating! It also seemed like a good Gongdeok izakaya for a blind date, a date night, or a casual drink with coworkers 🍶

What we ordered with the yakitori omakase

Yakitori Shomong menu order guide
Yakitori omakase and drinking-food menu
  • Yakitori omakase ₩14,800 × 2 people: tsukune, negima, chicken tenderloin
  • Vongole sake-steamed clams ₩32,000
  • Yakisoba ₩22,000

I thought skewers alone might be a little lacking, so we chose the vongole sake-steamed clams and yakisoba as well. To give you the conclusion first: the combination was a total success 😆💛

Three kinds of yakitori omakase served warm

First, the yakitori omakase we had been looking forward to arrived! Rather than coming out all at once, it was served warm in the order it was grilled, so we could really enjoy each skewer’s juices and smoky char 🔥

Moist chicken tenderloin bursting with juices

The first skewer we had was chicken tenderloin! It can easily be a dry cut, but I was surprised when moist juices gently spread with the first bite 😳

The outside had a subtle smoky char, while the inside was tender and clean-tasting, so when I lightly dipped it in the seasoning served alongside it,

the savory depth came alive perfectly! Once I tried it, I immediately understood why so many reviews call this a “juicy chicken tenderloin skewer” 👍🏻

Negima, the chicken-and-scallion combination

The negima came with plump pieces of chicken threaded between large pieces of scallion.

The balance of savory, juicy chicken and fragrant scallion, sweetened by the grill, was really wonderful!

The scallion refreshed the palate between bites of chicken, making this a flavor I kept reaching for 😋🔥

Chewy tsukune with egg

Last was tsukune, my favorite 💛 Finely minced chicken was shaped into a thick patty and grilled, leaving it golden outside and moist within.

Break open the egg served alongside, then generously dip in the tsukune, and it becomes such a special treat with an extra nutty, soft richness!

The lightly sweet sauce, rich egg, and chewy tsukune texture went so well together that it was excellent with drinks too 🍶✨

Vongole sake-steamed clams with plenty of shellfish and noodles

The vongole sake-steamed clams arrived in a huge pot! It was loaded with Manila clams and mussels, with a generous portion of noodles in the center, so it took care of both drinking food and a meal at once 😍

One spoonful of the broth revealed a deep, refreshing umami from the shellfish, with a subtle nutty butter flavor. It was salty in the best way and kept drawing me back, so a bite of skewer followed by a sip of broth was an absolutely fantastic combination hahaha 🫶🏻

The noodles were also soaked with shellfish broth, so it almost felt like eating vongole pasta! The portion was quite generous too, making it a good dish to share when visiting with several people. If you’re looking for a Gongdeok izakaya with a warm brothy dish, definitely order the vongole sake-steamed clams too 🍲💕

Yakisoba topped with bonito flakes and a soft-cooked egg

Last came the yakisoba, generous-looking from the very first glance! The noodles were piled with bonito flakes, a soft-cooked egg, scallions, and mayonnaise. I broke the yolk and mixed everything evenly through the bouncy noodles; the salty-sweet sauce became even richer, and I simply couldn’t put my chopsticks down 🤤 The aroma of the bonito flakes and the crisp texture of the vegetables stayed lively, so it was delicious right to the end!

It was a filling meal dish to add when yakitori alone feels a little incomplete. With skewers, noodles, and warm broth all available, I’d recommend it as good Japanese food around Gongdeok for anyone who wants to share several dishes 🥢✨

Every skewer had proper smoky char and juicy flavor, and both the vongole sake-steamed clams and yakisoba were delicious, so it was an evening with no wrong menu choices 🍢🐚🍳 If you’re looking for Japanese food with a great atmosphere near Mapo Station or a Gongdeok izakaya with lots of tasty drinking dishes, visit Yakitori Shomong Mapo Station Branch 🤎
