Mapo Japanese pub for aged sashimi and grilled offal: Orot Silbi
In short
Orot Silbi is an izakaya near Gongdeok and Mapo stations in Mapo, Seoul. I tried seasonal aged sashimi and charcoal-grilled beef intestines with dry highballs. Verdict: a lovely stop for drinks and snacks after a forest-path walk.

Getting to Orot Silbi from Gongdeok and Mapo stations, plus parking

Orot Silbi is right by Exit 10 of Gongdeok Station, just about a five-minute walk away! It is also close to Mapo Station, so I recommend it if you are looking for an izakaya or drinking spot near Mapo Station 👍🏻 Walk along the Gyeongui Line Forest Park trail and duck slightly into an alley—you will find it on the second floor!

It fits perfectly into a forest-path date route: take a light walk with your partner, then stop by. The place is tucked inside an alley, though, so there is no dedicated parking.

If you are driving, parking in the alley is quite difficult, so it is less stressful to check nearby Dohwa Public Parking Lot or Yeomni Public Parking Lot in advance. One important thing to know for an evening visit: ordering alcohol is required during dinner service.

Those who do not drink at all should keep that in mind, but for having a light drink with delicious food in that classic Mapo Station bar atmosphere, it could not be better. (Only one person needs to order alcohol.) It is such a popular spot with couples and blind-date guests that I recommend booking ahead through Catchtable or Naver if you are planning a visit.
The seasonal sashimi and charcoal-grilled offal combination

There were lots of menu options, but we went with the sashimi set! We chose sashimi as the main and picked something else for the side. You can order on mobile by holding your phone close to the menu, so that is all you need to do.

Thick, satisfyingly chewy seasonal sashimi
The first dish to arrive was the seasonal sashimi (₩48,000), a neatly presented assortment of aged raw fish made with only the fattiest and tastiest fish in season. It was generously composed of abalone, salmon, rockfish, squid, eel, tuna, egg, and more, and the visuals caught my eye from the start.

The aging was so excellent: instead of the tough chew of freshly caught raw fish, it had a pleasing springiness that clung to the tongue, with the fish's deep umami just exploding. I am really sensitive to fishy smells, but there was none at all, and that thick texture was a work of art.

After one piece, I completely understood why Orot Silbi, a Mapo favorite, has received the Blue Ribbon for six consecutive years. The quality was genuinely gasp-worthy.

Charcoal aroma and sweet-spicy flavor in the grilled offal
Next came the charcoal-grilled offal (₩24,000). As soon as it hit the table, its rich smoky aroma pleasantly tickled my nose and got my mouth watering. It was well-aged beef large intestine coated in a special sweet-spicy sauce and grilled golden over direct heat.

The fatty, nutty juices characteristic of large intestine burst out, while the spicy seasoning cut through the richness completely. Alternating a tender, never-tough bite of intestine with the clean, pleasantly chewy sashimi made for a perfect balance of sweet-salty and savory flavors. I have no choice but to admit that this place is the real deal for drinking snacks.
Do unsweetened highballs work with the food?

Since a drink order is required here, we ordered two highballs to enjoy chilled alongside the tasty snacks. Honestly, I had ordered them expecting the sweet highballs I usually drink, full of syrup or tonic-water flavor, so when I took that first sip, the almost complete lack of sweetness caught me slightly off guard and felt a little disappointing.

If you are expecting a sweet, cocktail-style drink, it may come across as rather dry and weighty. But this highball revealed its real surprise charm alongside the food. Without any artificial sweetness, it did not interfere with the rich, fatty, deeply flavored dishes; instead, it cleaned up the palate beautifully.

It preserved the delicate flavor of the thick aged sashimi, and after a bite of spicy, fatty charcoal-grilled offal, a sip of fizzy highball washed away the lingering grease so refreshingly—actually, I loved it haha. For anyone seeking a classic pairing that brings out the food's own deep flavor rather than a sweet drink, I would say this is a total perfect match. From the atmosphere to the snacks, everything was wonderful, so I recommend Orot Silbi, an izakaya near the Gyeongui Line Forest Park and Mapo Station where you are bound to earn plenty of praise if you bring your partner.
