Mapo Korean bar for stew and potato pancakes: Jeongju Ilga

The weather has been pleasantly cool lately, with a gentle breeze blowing, so my husband and I went for a walk at Mangwon Hangang Park. We had such a fun date strolling along that before we knew it, it was nearly dinner time—and we really felt like having a drink with some delicious food to share.

So we rushed right over to Jeongju Ilga (정주일가), a Korean bar in Mangwon-dong that is well known for its Korean dishes and drinks.

Jeongju Ilga is about 549 m from Mangwon Station Exit 2, so it was really easy to find. After walking for about five minutes from the station, you will spot its neat exterior near Mega Coffee on Mangridan-gil. It is easy to get to and in just the right spot for a little walk around the neighborhood.

A modern yet welcoming jumak atmosphere

The moment we stepped inside, it had such a strong modern yet cozy jumak (traditional Korean tavern) feel. Everything looked clean, and it was obvious that the place was carefully maintained, so I felt at ease about eating there. Traditional Korean liquor can sometimes feel a little formal or intimidating, but this was a casual, atmospheric Mangwon-dong favorite that people of all ages, including younger crowds, could comfortably enjoy.

Ordering brisket doenjang-jjigae and pepperoni potato pancakes

As we looked over the menu at the table, it was packed with tempting Korean dishes to share. They have such a wide selection, including Jeongju bossam with tender pork and tangy kimchi, brisket doenjang hot pot with a rich broth, half-and-half pancakes with bulgogi chive pancake and cheese kimchi pancake, and Korean beef yukhoe with cheese.

Honestly, this is a place my husband and I have gone back to again and again and again, haha. We have often come with friends for get-togethers, and I have lost count of how many times we have visited together—it is a tried-and-true Korean bar that has been loved on Mangridan-gil for a long time. We already knew why it has so many regulars in Mangwon-dong, so I was happy the moment we sat down.

This time, we were craving something with a spicy kick, so we ordered brisket doenjang-jjigae (soybean-paste stew) and crispy, savory pepperoni potato pancakes.

It was a little warm out, so we decided to start by quenching our thirst with a cold draft beer, then move on to soju later, haha.

Once we had ordered, they first brought out crispy Kkuimaen as a complimentary snack. Taking crunchy bites of it with sips of beer while waiting for the main dishes was a small but lovely treat. The cold draft beer made all the fatigue of the day feel like it had disappeared.

Rich, spicy brisket doenjang-jjigae

After a short wait, our brisket doenjang-jjigae, the main dish we had ordered, finally arrived with a burner.

Just watching it bubble away was enough to get my mouth watering. The aroma of its deep broth—the kind no Korean could dislike—rose right up to my nose, and I could see it was loaded with savory beef brisket.

I scooped up a big spoonful of broth, and the deep flavor of the doenjang was beautifully infused with the rich nuttiness of the brisket. The broth was truly excellent. Best of all, it was not heavy or dull—it had a lively spicy kick that absolutely called for soju, haha. We immediately ordered a bottle and poured ourselves a drink.

Crispy and moist pepperoni potato pancakes

The pepperoni potato pancakes that came next were equally impressive from the moment they arrived. The golden-brown potato pancakes were generously topped with salty pepperoni, plus plenty of melted yellow cheese. I could not help but admire them just by looking at them.

When I pulled one apart with my chopsticks and took a bite, the outside was wonderfully crisp while the inside stayed moist, with the mild flavor of potato coming through clearly. With every bite, the salty umami of the pepperoni came together with the rich, gooey cheese and filled my mouth with happiness.

The combination of crispness and moisture was completely my thing. A bite of rich, spicy brisket doenjang-jjigae followed by a bite of nutty, crispy pepperoni potato pancake was the perfect sweet-and-salty pairing. My husband and I kept marveling at how well we had chosen our two dishes as we emptied our soju glasses. When the food is this good, the drinks go down so easily.

The restaurant is meticulously clean, and the staff are always kind, so every visit leaves me feeling happy. It is also such an easy route after a date at Mangwon Hangang Park: take a light walk, stop by, and enjoy dinner with a drink. I think I will keep coming back.
