Seongsu okonomiyaki with free kirimochi topping: Oshi Black Seongsu
In short
Oshi Black Seongsu is a teppan (hot plate) Japanese restaurant on the basement floor of Seoulsup 4-gil in Seongdong, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Exit 5 of Seoul Forest Station. The okonomiyaki (oshinomiyaki) classic costs 18,000 won and the pork belly roll yakisoba 14,000 won, and a receipt review event added a free kirimochi (rice cake) topping. The mild okonomiyaki and the salty yakisoba fill each other out, so ordering both is the way to go at Oshi Black Seongsu.

Whenever I'm craving Japanese food around Seongsu-dong or Seoul Forest, my feet naturally head to Oshi Black Seongsu. It's a Seongsu-area favorite where you can enjoy both okonomiyaki and yakisoba in one place, and a go-to Japanese restaurant near Seoul Forest — here's my review after visiting in person!

Finding the basement entrance to Oshi Black Seongsu

It's located near the Seoul Forest atelier path, making it a great stop after a walk. Being on the basement level, it's a bit hard to spot, but once you find the sign and head down the stairs, the entrance appears right away.

Going down to the basement, the entrance comes into view. The space isn't huge, but it has a comfortable, not-too-cramped size.

They also stock a really wide variety of drinks,

This is the menu for meals-slash-drinking snacks! You'll see set menus on the left.

Since the neighborhood gets so many international visitors, they also have menus fully ready in English, Japanese, and Chinese!

Worth checking the ingredient origin board too~

Once seated at the table, there's a notice about the Naver receipt review event.

When you order the okonomiyaki (oshinomiyaki), you can add one free topping from shrimp (4pc), kirimochi (rice cake), mozzarella, or macaroni. We took part and chose kirimochi haha.

There was also this note on each table..! 聞きたい ("I want to ask").

How the oshinomiyaki classic and pork belly roll yakisoba taste

Our order — okonomiyaki (oshinomiyaki) classic (₩18,000) and pork belly roll yakisoba (₩14,000) — arrived. Once the dishes are finished, staff bring them over to your table.

This is that birthday/event bear candle I mentioned! So cute haha. If you request it, they'll stick the bear candle right into your finished okonomiyaki — definitely grab the coupon if you want it.

I was worried two dishes wouldn't be enough, but once we actually ate, it turned out to be a satisfying, just-right amount.

The okonomiyaki (oshinomiyaki) classic stood out for being mild and not at all intense in flavor. The cabbage and batter blend together softly, in a way that doesn't get tiring even as you keep eating. The sauce also wasn't as heavy as it looked, so the natural flavor of the ingredients came through more than expected. The kirimochi we added through the review event was nice and chewy, and it worked really well.

The pork belly roll yakisoba, on the other hand, was a completely different vibe..! The sauce was saltier and punchier than it looked, soaked well into the noodles, and the savory flavor built up with every bite. With pork belly rolled around the outside adding a rich, greasy note on top, it landed in the exact opposite spot from the mild okonomiyaki.

So one's the dish for a mild, plain kind of enjoyment, and the other is for a salty, bold kind of enjoyment! Ordering both together felt much more satisfying, since each one fills in what the other is missing.

To finish, they even gave us a palate-cleansing candy. We left feeling clean and full to the very end! Oshi Black is a great spot to have in mind whenever you're craving Japanese food around Seoul Forest and Seongsu.
