Hwang Gop Magoknaru Branch: a terrace gopchang restaurant by Magoknaru Station

Hwang Gop Magoknaru Branch is a gopchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant on the 1st floor of Castle Park near Magoknaru Station. On a weekend evening I was craving gopchang with a friend, so we looked around the area near Magoknaru Station and ended up here because the tent-bar vibe looked great.

It's autumn now, so it's cool even during the day and there's a nice breeze in the evenings, perfect for being outdoors 🍁🍂 On days like this, instead of staying indoors, I find myself heading to cafés or restaurants with wide-open doors or a terrace.

On a weekend we were craving gopchang and looked around the area, and this tent-bar-feeling spot won us over — Hwang Gop, a gopchang restaurant near Magoknaru Station!!

The area around Magoknaru Station, close to Seoul Botanic Park and Magok COEX, has plenty of good restaurants. Hwang Gop has such an open feel that visiting on an autumn evening really delivered that tent-bar atmosphere.

There's even a terrace space, so it doesn't have that messy or uncomfortable feel typical tent bars sometimes have — it was very cleanly maintained and comfortable to eat in.

What comes free with the table: yukhoe and muksabal

The basic table setting at Hwang Gop Magoknaru Branch includes yukhoe (beef tartare) and muksabal (acorn jelly soup). It was a perfect appetizer combo to enjoy before the gopchang finished grilling.

After sitting down and choosing our menu, the basic table setting turned out to include yukhoe and muksabal — of all things!!!

Yukhoe and muksabal served as part of the basic table setting

Usually at a gopchang restaurant you'd expect chives or pickled onions as the side dishes.

So it was a nice surprise to find yukhoe and muksabal included in the basic setting — a genuinely great appetizer to have while waiting for the gopchang to cook.

We came for gopchang but got to enjoy yukhoe and muksabal as well, right from the start, which made the meal feel quite generous.

On top of that, they set out gopchang's usual side-dish companions too — pickled onions, myeongi-namul (mountain garlic leaves), chives, and green onion kimchi.

The side-dish self-bar, refillable down to the myeongi-namul

At Hwang Gop Magoknaru Branch, you can help yourself to every banchan, including myeongi-namul, from the self-bar. Given how many places charge extra for myeongi-namul, this was clearly great value.

Myeongi-namul is often served just once as a basic portion, with extra servings costing extra at many places...

But at Hwang Gop, every banchan, including myeongi-namul, is ready at the self-bar, so we could eat as much as we wanted — the value was really good.

What is in the Hwang Gop mixed platter? Five cuts on one pan

What we ordered was the Hwang Gop mixed platter. It comes with five cuts on one plate: gopchang, makchang, daechang, yeomtong (beef heart), and pork belly & brisket.

With five different types of meat — gopchang, makchang, daechang, yeomtong, and pork belly & brisket — all on one platter, this is great to bring friends or coworkers with different tastes in cuts.

With such a varied mix, it's fun letting everyone pick out their favorite cut. Once the mixed gopchang platter piled up on the grill, it already looked delicious. And we didn't even have to worry about flipping everything ourselves —

Staff grilling the gopchang to just the right doneness

the staff grilled everything to just the right timing, which was really convenient. Eat too early and it's not quite right; keep grilling too long and it can get chewy or burnt — but they grilled it to just the right doneness, so we could focus purely on eating haha.

How does gopchang packed with fat taste at Hwang Gop?

The gopchang in the Hwang Gop mixed platter was golden brown on the outside and packed full of fat inside. Chewy without being tough, we polished off the whole platter between the two of us in no time.

When I finally took a bite of the well-grilled gopchang, I thought, this is exactly why people love gopchang. Golden on the outside, packed with fat inside — one bite and that nutty, savory flavor filled my mouth.

It kept that signature chewy texture but wasn't too tough — tender and soft, and before we knew it, we'd cleared the whole platter.

Mixing and matching with the side dishes served alongside let us enjoy a range of different flavors too.

Finishing with fried rice, stir-fried in the kitchen

The fried rice at Hwang Gop Magoknaru Branch is cooked directly in the kitchen over high heat and brought to the table. Not having to fry it ourselves at the table made for an easy finish.

We'd already eaten our fill of delicious gopchang, but of course, Koreans run on rice!!

Somehow the meal doesn't feel complete unless you finish with fried rice, made on the grill with all that leftover sauce and rice haha. At Hwang Gop, the fried rice is cooked properly in the kitchen over strong heat and delivered to the table, so we got to enjoy it hassle-free — and even after eating so much gopchang, the fried rice was still delicious and we just kept eating.

Adding a bit of chives from the self-bar on top and scraping up all the crispy bits made for a really satisfying finish to a meal that started with gopchang.

Verdict: autumn terrace mood plus value at Hwang Gop

Hwang Gop Magoknaru Branch delivered on both the gopchang itself and the basic table setting. With the staff doing the grilling, we could focus purely on eating, and the autumn evening tent-bar atmosphere was spot on.

It's not just that the gopchang was good — the free yukhoe, muksabal, and other basic banchan were both tasty and great value, which made the whole experience satisfying.

The staff were friendly and grilled everything with care to make eating easy, so we could focus purely on enjoying the meal in a good mood — it really felt like we got to enjoy gopchang at its best!!
