It was just past 7pm on a Friday when I stopped by Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch for dinner with my mom. Even though it was a bit late, there wasn't a single empty table when we arrived — I guess that's how you know it's a good spot. Luckily, we only waited about 10 minutes using Tabling before getting a table.

There's a separate waiting area on the left side of the restaurant, so my mom and I weren't uncomfortable while we waited.

Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch is inside Dormitory Building E on the Samsung Changjo Campus, so it's really easy to get to. If you're having trouble finding it, head east from the central plaza toward the building covered in ivy.

Two hours of free parking made it stress-free to visit as a family. After eating, just register your car for 2 hours yourself at the self-service kiosk inside the store — don't forget!

The unlimited fried egg self-bar and how fast the food arrives

Another thing I love about Cafe Dongyi is the self-service bar! Unlimited rice, seaweed, fried egg, and barley candy (boritganjeong) — I was really into this. With egg prices going up so much these days, being able to fry your own eggs endlessly felt oddly reassuring!

I don't know why a fried egg made in a restaurant's frying pan always tastes so much better than one at home. Haha. Thanks to that, I got a proper protein top-up. Apparently they also have heotgae tea (a hangover herbal tea), but it wasn't out that day — maybe because we came late.

Service was pretty fast too! The food arrived while I was still making fried eggs at the self-bar. I was worried about making my parents wait too long for dinner because of me... but the wait was short even on an empty stomach, which I really appreciated.

And what is up with this rice?? So glossy, each grain chewy — I didn't know rice could taste this good.

Cafe Dongyi apparently uses Gimpo Geumssal rice, which might explain why the rice was so good. Of course the rice goes down easy with tasty meat dishes, but the rice itself was so good I ended up having a second bowl.

Dongyi grilled pork bulgogi set, 9,900 won

The grilled pork bulgogi is a steady seller at Cafe Dongyi. It's a soy-based sweet-and-savory flavor with a smoky char, giving it a different charm from the spicy pork stir-fry. The sauce is made from blended fruits and vegetables, so it's salty with a subtle sweetness that isn't overpowering — a flavor kids would probably love too.

Eating it with the cabbage salad on the side added a nice crunch. It also came with seaweed soup (miyeokguk) as a default side, made with perilla seed base and famous Gijang seaweed — personally I really loved this combination.

I especially loved wrapping cabbage and the pork bulgogi in a sheet of seaweed from the self-bar... total rice thief! Mixing and matching bites with the seaweed wrap made eating fun, and before I knew it, the rice had magically disappeared.

Dongyi grilled spicy pork set, 12,900 won

The grilled spicy pork bulgogi set is Cafe Dongyi's signature dish and a premium single-person menu. The meat comes out sizzling on a personal grill to keep it hot, and it looked so appetizing it stirred up my appetite immediately.

Cooked at 300 degrees Celsius, the vegetables kept their crunch and the meat kept its juiciness. The red sauce looked like it would be quite spicy, but it was more mildly spicy-sweet than expected, and the smoky char flavor was fantastic. One bite of meat and you're already thinking about rice! The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) that came with it in a earthenware pot was also great.

Rather than tasting artificially seasoned, it felt like a homemade traditional-style doenjang stew — not salty, and generously packed with tofu and mushrooms.

After eating rich, savory meat, a spoonful of the doenjang jjigae refreshes your palate, making you want to go back for more meat. The pairing of meat and doenjang stew never fails.

Dongyi yeast-aged tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour pork), small, 17,800 won

And the one I was really looking forward to — Dongyi's yeast-aged tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork)! Apparently, aging it with yeast (nuruk) makes it rich in lactic acid bacteria and amino acids. It comes in a large size, so you cut it into bite-sized pieces yourself.

We ordered the small size for two, and it was plenty. For 3 people, go medium; for 4 or more, go large. The batter, made with no flour at all, is thin rather than thick, giving it that crispy-outside, moist-inside style. Frying oil quality matters a lot for fried dishes, and you could tell they use clean oil checked daily with an acid value tester. The thick chunks of meat were satisfying to bite into. The sauce was especially memorable — a whole lemon inside gave it a lively sweet-and-sour flavor. Tangsuyuk is always dipping, not pouring, in my book!

Dipping the crispy tangsuyuk in the sauce added a tangy note that kept it from feeling greasy — I couldn't stop reaching for more. And the fried rice cake served alongside was also a treat! Chewy yet crispy, and nuttier the more you chewed, so I kept grabbing one between bites of tangsuyuk.

After the meal, we wrapped up with the barley candy (boritganjeong) from the self-bar. Sweet and crunchy, perfect as an after-meal snack. And the tangy-sweet omija (schisandra berry) juice served as dessert — even though it was just one glass, they gave us an extra serving on the house, and it left our mouths feeling clean and refreshed! From meat, to rice, fried egg, seaweed, barley candy, and finally dessert — we walked out fully and satisfyingly full.

Is Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch worth it? Final verdict

Cafe Dongyi Chimsan Branch was, overall, an affordable place to have a filling, homestyle meal. In particular, the self-bar's unlimited rice, seaweed, fried egg, and barley candy made it great value, and the food came out fast without a long wait.

The grilled spicy pork stir-fry brings out your appetite with its smoky, spicy flavor, while the grilled pork bulgogi's sweet soy seasoning is easy for anyone, young or old, to enjoy. Add the yeast-aged tangsuyuk and you've got a varied spread that's great for sharing as a family.

Above all, its location inside Samsung Changjo Campus makes it easily accessible, and the 2 hours of free parking is a real plus! Great value plus care that shows through from the rice, to the side dishes, to the main dishes — both my mom and I finished a very satisfying dinner.

Taste matters, but I also just really love Cafe Dongyi's spirit of service, so I want to keep coming back.
