Why Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread is a must-stop on a Sokcho trip

From the look to the texture, Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread (속초불탄감자빵) was seriously amazing. You know how it goes, right? In Gangneung you buy Gangneung sandwiches, in Hwangridan-gil you buy Hwangnam jjondeugi, and when you're in Sokcho, you have to eat Sokcho burnt potato bread haha. Honestly it's become a required stop now haha

4-piece potato bread box and packed Sokcho jjondeugi

What to buy seems pretty settled too. One 4-piece box of potato bread plus Sokcho jjondeugi (chewy sweet snack), and you get that "ah, I really did Sokcho properly" feeling haha. Here's my story of a place I was truly satisfied with, starting right now~~!

Where is Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread, and what about parking?

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread is near Sokcho IC, so access was really good. It's great for a stop right as you arrive in Sokcho, and perfect for picking up takeout before heading back to Seoul. Parking is fairly roomy too, so it was easy to visit by car.

Storefront with the Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread sign

A sign you can see from afar, with Sokcho jjondeugi next door

The storefront practically shouts "we sell potato bread here!!!" lol The sign says Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread in big letters, so you can spot it from far away. Next to it they also sell Sokcho jjondeugi. These days lots of people buy the potato bread + jjondeugi combo when they come to Sokcho. I couldn't resist either and packed both lol

The black "burnt potato" look made with squid ink

The potato breads are lined up neatly, and that black color really catches your eye. At first glance they look like actual burnt potatoes lolllol What a great idea. There are so many kinds of potato bread these days, right?

But Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread stands out clearly from the looks alone. I heard they use squid ink to get the black color. It captures the Sokcho feel and the concept is clear, so it was even more memorable.

How does it taste? Chewy outside, fluffy inside

One potato bread tried right away

I tried one right away. Wow, the texture is crazy. The outside is super chewy. It's like a rice cake made with potato starch, that bouncy chew, and it gets better the more you chew.

Potato bread with a chewy outside and fluffy inside

The inside is a total twist. It's fluffy, like real mashed potato, soft and mild, and so good. Chewy outside, fluffy inside, exactly that. This combo is crazy good lol

Sokcho jjondeugi bought with the potato bread

Sokcho jjondeugi, the perfect long-drive snack

The Sokcho jjondeugi I bought along with it was tasty too. It has that classic sweet, chewy jjondeugi texture and is sneakily addictive. Eaten with the potato bread you get a sweet-and-salty thing going, a great combo. I get now why people buy them as a set lol

It's good as a souvenir and good for munching in the car, so I fully recommend it as a travel snack! It's not that people buy it and don't eat it. If you just keep jjondeugi in the car, you end up eating it nonstop on long drives, it's that kind of magical food haha

Is Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread good as a gift for parents?

This time I took a few boxes home for my parents and the reaction was really good. They're very picky eaters, but they said it was delicious as soon as they tried it lol The texture especially won them over. They kept eating, saying "it's bread, so why is it so chewy?" lol It was tasty a day later too.

Day-old potato bread: just a quick microwave

When I gave the day-old bread a quick microwave, it turned fluffy again and felt freshly baked. So it's really good as a gift too. If you're coming back from a Sokcho trip wondering "what should I bring home?", I totally recommend Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread haha

Why I recommend it as a Sokcho souvenir and dessert

Chewy outside, fluffy potato inside, Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread was definitely fun to eat. If you're going to Sokcho, I hope you try it at least once. You'll understand right away why people keep buying it lol If you're looking for a Sokcho souvenir, dessert or bakery, this is a place I truly recommend! That wraps up my truly satisfied review~~!
