Sindang-dong chicken restaurant with takeout whole chicken: Gyeryugwan
In short
Gyeryugwan is an oak-fired whole chicken restaurant inside Hwanghak Market, near Exit 2 of Sindang Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. A couple ordered the oak and neungi mushroom fired chicken and soupy dakbal (chicken feet) with makgeolli, then had one more whole chicken packed to take to their parents. Gyeryugwan is the place to come back to when you want juicy roasted chicken rather than fried.

Whenever my other half and I both go "what should we eat for chicken?", there's one place that pops into both our heads at once — Gyeryugwan, our go-to Sindang-dong chicken restaurant! We both like fried chicken too, but we're really into oak-fired whole chicken. I don't want the kind sold out of a truck on the street, and once we found Gyeryugwan... we just head straight there, no questions asked haha. If you're hunting for good chicken in Sindang-dong, let me show you why I keep coming back to Gyeryugwan :)

Where is Gyeryugwan? Inside Hwanghak Market, Sindang Station Exit 2
Come out of Sindang Station Exit 2, go into the Hwanghak Market entrance, turn left, and you'll spot it right away. Seriously close haha.

As soon as you come out of the exit, the Hwanghak Market entrance is right in front of you. Go in and turn left and you'll see it quickly. There's no dedicated lot at the restaurant, so if you're driving, check nearby options like the Hwanghak-dong public parking lot!
How long is the wait at Gyeryugwan?

Gyeryugwan is famous enough that I once waited about 20 minutes on a previous visit. But guess what? We walked straight in this time haha. Wait times obviously vary by day and time slot, so keep that in mind when you visit!
You can also watch the whole chickens being roasted right next to you!
Inside Gyeryugwan: tables for two up to group seating

Once you're inside, there are tables for two up to tables for four, and if there's a bigger group, they can push tables together — good for a casual chimaek (chicken and beer) date for two or for a get-together with friends 👍

You can see the food being prepared inside, and honestly this kind of open kitchen just makes me trust the place more haha.

The restroom is inside too, so no need to step outside!

True to the name, most of the menu is made up of all kinds of chicken dishes! From roasted whole chicken to dakbal (chicken feet), so if you love chicken dishes... right now, right here haha.

After ordering, side dishes that go well with the roasted chicken come out — diced radish kimchi, cabbage kimchi, and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste)!

My husband and I have both been so busy lately... we technically live together but hadn't properly seen each other's faces for about three days haha. Is that even right? So for the first time in a while, we sat down face to face, poured some makgeolli, and caught up on all the talks we'd missed haha.
Oak and neungi mushroom fired chicken, stuffed with glutinous rice

No matter how many new dishes we try to demolish each time we come, this is one we can never skip. At Gyeryugwan, the oak and neungi mushroom fired chicken is a must-order!!

The outside is properly roasted over firewood, golden brown, and the inside is packed full of glutinous rice.

Did you all know chicken can basically melt in your mouth? Haha, there's almost no dryness to the meat at all, it's incredibly tender haha.
Looks like they've added a new sauce this time — wow, this sauce is seriously on point... 🐶 total winner..!! The owner also thoughtfully checks tables now and then and brings out more side dishes when you run low haha.

A bite of chicken, then a bite of glutinous rice, topped with kimchi... oh man~🤤🤤
Soupy dakbal (chicken feet) with a soft-boiled egg

I ordered the soupy dakbal thinking "I've never had it, might as well try it once" — and oh my goodness,,, why did I only try this now,,,? I'm actually mad at myself...

It's genuinely delicious haha, both my husband and I started inhaling it haha. It went surprisingly well paired with the whole chicken.

But for me, as good as the dakbal was... I got completely hooked on the soft-boiled egg inside it haha. Wow, this thing is seriously insane!! If you could order extra soft-boiled eggs on their own, I'd want to add a few more just to keep eating them haha.
Gyeryugwan takeout: one whole chicken for the parents

Isn't it basically a universal rule that when something's this good, you think of family haha. Thinking of my parents, I packed an extra whole chicken to take home haha. You know how it is — even if I say something's delicious, older folks' tastes can be different, but when my parents enjoy it too, it somehow feels officially verified haha.

If you're looking for a good Sindang-dong chicken restaurant and you're craving oak-fired, juicy roasted whole chicken with glutinous rice inside instead of the usual fried chicken, head straight to Gyeryugwan, no questions asked ♥
