Sadang sashimi bar dinner date: half flounder, half salmon at Susan

In short

Susan Sadang Main Branch is an aged-sashimi izakaya near Sadang Station in Dongjak, Seoul, serving aged raw fish alongside beef sashimi. On a dinner date with her husband, the writer ordered the gwangban-yeonban (half flounder, half salmon platter) at 48,000 won — the flounder chewy and clean-tasting, the salmon soft and nutty, so alternating between the two never got old. Susan Sadang Main Branch suits a night when you want sashimi and one light drink instead of heavy anju (drinking food).

Lately when my husband and I go on dinner dates, I find myself looking for places where we can eat good sashimi and have a light drink instead of something too heavy. So this time we went to Susan Sadang Main Branch near Sadang Station :)

Susan Sadang Main Branch menu and prices

A special thing about Susan Sadang Main Branch is that you can enjoy yukhoe (raw beef) and beef sashimi along with the aged sashimi. So next time I'd like to order some of the beef menu along with sashimi too. Since you can enjoy both seafood and meat menus together, it's a great place to visit with a group and order a variety of dishes~?!

Menu board at Susan Sadang Main Branch
Menu listing gwangban-yuksa and yukhoe maki
  • Gwangban-yuksa (flounder + beef sashimi) ₩48,000 — when you can't decide what to eat, the answer is 'half and half': a collaboration of chewy aged flounder sashimi and 1++ grade Korean beef sashimi
  • Yukhoe maki ₩25,000 — a nutty, rich bite generously topped with fresh yukhoe (raw seasoned beef)!
  • Sweet shrimp buckwheat noodles ₩23,000 — buckwheat noodles topped with rows of sweet shrimp for maximum visual impact, a light but luxurious dish full of umami
Menu listing mala suji oden and miso oden
  • Mala suji oden ₩40,000 — addictively numbing-spicy with a deep oden broth added in, the kind of flavor that keeps the drinks coming
  • Miso oden ₩40,000 — a deep, rich hatcho miso base with beef brisket, chunky radish and fish cakes, addictively umami-rich, the best!
  • Suji oden ₩30,000 — premium oden combining chewy suji (beef tendon) and springy fish cakes, with a clear but deep broth that's outstanding!

How does the 48,000 won half-flounder, half-salmon platter taste?

What we ordered was the gwangban-yeonban for ₩48,000! It's a menu made up of half flounder and half salmon, so it was perfect for us since we wanted both.

Neatly arranged gwangban-yeonban aged sashimi platter

The sashimi comes arranged neatly, and just looking at it you get a sense that the quality is decent. The flounder was chewy and had a clean, mild flavor, and the salmon was soft and nutty, so alternating between the two never got boring haha.

Personally, I think the texture and umami of the sashimi itself matter most with aged sashimi, and overall the condition of the sashimi was good and delicious, so I was satisfied. If you want to eat sashimi in Sadang and are looking for somewhere to properly enjoy aged sashimi rather than a typical raw fish restaurant, this is a good Sadang spot for that.

Table setting during a dinner date at Susan Sadang Main Branch

Is Susan Sadang Main Branch good for a date or a group night out?

You can eat the sashimi in a clean, light way while also enjoying the cozy atmosphere typical of an izakaya, which made it good for chatting during a dinner date. Especially if you're looking for a spot around Sadang Station for a date, gathering, or work dinner, I'd recommend it since the location is good and there's a decent range of menu options.

If you like aged sashimi, I'd also recommend the gwangban-yeonban where you can enjoy flounder and salmon together. The sashimi quality was good and we ate well — next time I'd like to try the yukhoe or the warm oden dishes too at Susan Sadang Main Branch❤️
