You know that feeling when you just keep craving something sour and spicy? Not a plain broth, but the kind of dish that wakes your taste buds up the second it hits your tongue! I happened to be at Sejong Lake Park and dropped by "Mekong Thai Sejong Lake Park Branch."

The vibe at Mekong Thai Sejong Lake Park Branch

Walking in, the first thing I noticed was how clean and tidy the whole place felt. Rather than the overly flashy, busy look you might expect from a Thai restaurant, it had a comfortable atmosphere where you can just enjoy your meal. Not too much for a date, and easygoing enough for a family meal too!

There were so many menu options that I spent a while deciding what to get. From pho to pad thai, fried rice, curries, and sides — if you come with a few people, ordering several dishes to share sounds great. But that day my head was already fully occupied by tom yum...

What I ordered — tom yum noodle soup (large) + shrimp pencil spring rolls

Here's the menu, for reference. I ordered the tom yum noodle soup (large) without a second thought. And you can't just have noodle soup alone, right? Haha, I wanted a crunchy side dish alongside it, so I finished off the order with shrimp pencil spring rolls!

Shrimp pencil spring rolls — the appeal is that crunch

Shrimp pencil spring rolls! A side dish with irresistibly crunchy texture! The combination of thin, crispy spring roll wrappers and plump shrimp meant they weren't heavy at all, and were easy to pick up one after another. Best of all, they paired really well with the spicy, sour tom yum noodle soup and tasted great together. I think I'd order these again as a side next time I get tom yum noodle soup. ෆ

The large tom yum noodle soup arrives!

Finally, the tom yum noodle soup I'd been waiting for showed up. And in the large size, no less! Food served in a big bowl always makes me feel extra satisfied somehow, haha. As soon as it landed on the table, that fragrant, sour tom yum aroma started drifting up — anyone who already loves tom yum will feel their appetite waking up just from that smell. If regular pho has a comforting, savory charm, tom yum noodle soup makes its presence known from the very first whiff.

Glad I went with the large size after all...

And what I ordered was the large. On a day you want to eat heartily, the bigger size really is best! Slurping the noodles up together with the broth, the sour and spicy soup soaked right into the soft noodles and tasted amazing. Personally I prefer letting the noodles soak up plenty of broth rather than eating them plain. A big bite of noodles, then straight into a spoonful of broth! Ahh...♡

The tom yum aroma lingering in my mouth would flare right back up with the broth, so I kept alternating between noodles and soup. It got hot and spicy enough to work up a light sweat, but the sourness cut through the richness, so I could eat it relatively cleanly right to the end.

If you're used to regular pho and want something a bit different, give tom yum noodle soup a try! It's delicious enough to eat on its own the whole time, but adding some fried bites in between changed up the texture and made the meal much more fun. If two of you visit, adding a side to the main dish to share sounds like a great idea.
