Jack mackerel sashimi platter for a family gathering: Ttangkkeut Maeul

In short

Ttangkkeut Maeul is a takeout sashimi restaurant at stalls 42-43 on the first floor of Noryangjin Fisheries Market in Dongjak, Seoul, right in front of Gate Nam-1. Ahead of a family gathering, a medium-size jack mackerel assorted sashimi platter (₩90,000) was phone-reserved and packed with spicy fish stew ingredients, chilled in an insulated bag that kept the sashimi chewy through dinner. With flounder, mullet and sea bream mixed in alongside the mackerel, the variety never got boring — a satisfying, good-value platter for a family gathering.

We had a family gathering coming up after a long while, so I decided to prepare sashimi! There are so many shops inside Noryangjin Fisheries Market, but Ttangkkeut Maeul kept coming up in reviews for good value and a great assorted sashimi lineup, so that's where I headed.

When I got to the shop, it was full of fresh fish and seafood. I could see with my own eyes that the place was kept pretty clean too, which was a plus.

At the shop, the popular items were listed in big letters on a menu board, and the lineup looked like the photo above. They had a summer assorted platter, a premium assorted platter, sea bream, and the steady seller flounder-and-rockfish assorted platter — plus a summer-only "Ttang-makase" item, whose cute name kept catching my eye.

I'd actually checked the menu ahead of time, and after some thought we decided on the new item, "jack mackerel assorted sashimi," in the medium size. We ordered by phone reservation in advance, but on-site ordering is possible too, so I'd recommend either a walk-in or a phone reservation depending on your preference!

When ordering, they asked whether we needed the ingredients for spicy fish stew (maeuntang), and everything came packed generously like this.

Assorted sashimi packed inside an insulated bag

The assorted sashimi was packed by hand into an insulated bag like this — it stayed fresh, and by the time we ate it that evening, the chewy, springy texture was still completely intact, which I loved.

The composition and taste of the jack mackerel assorted sashimi

The jack mackerel assorted sashimi came packed with a variety of raw fish including jack mackerel, and since each fish had a different taste and texture, it was great to enjoy so much variety.

There was no fishy smell at all, and it was clean-tasting and chewy — so good that I kept reaching for more, haha. Since it's a new item, you won't find it on the shop's board, but you can check it through Inuh Gyoju Haejeokdan (the mermaid queen pirates community); I really recommend trying it.

Whenever you order just one single type of sashimi, there always comes a point where you get tired of it, but with this one we never got tired of it at all, and the whole family loved it.

Plate mixing flounder, mullet and sea bream sashimi

I think it was probably flounder, flounder fin, mullet, jack mackerel, sea bream, and more! Every kind was delicious, but personally the jack mackerel and the flounder were especially chewy and tasty.

Would I buy it again?

The jack mackerel assorted sashimi from Ttangkkeut Maeul, a sashimi restaurant at Noryangjin Fisheries Market, was so satisfying! The composition and the value for money were both excellent, so I think I'll keep buying it whenever we have family gatherings or events — or when my husband and I are having a fun night in after putting the kids to bed :-)
