Gyeongju Bomun family restaurant with baby chair and parking: Neulbom

While traveling around Gyeongju, we went looking for a place where we could eat with both my parents and the baby, and that's how we ended up at Neulbom in Gyeongju.

It's located between Bomun Lake Resort and Bulguksa, so it was easy to fit into our Gyeongju itinerary as a meal stop, and since parking is available right in front, it was also convenient for bringing my parents and the baby along. If you're the type of family trip where hunting for a tiny spot in a place like Hwangnidong or walking a long way after parking sounds stressful, this place is worth considering.

The address is 107 Bobul-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, a spot that fits nicely into a route covering both Bomun Lake Resort and Bulguksa. There's also space to park right in front of the restaurant, which turned out to matter a lot for a family like ours moving around with both parents and a baby.

Wednesday lunch: arriving at Neulbom at 11:30am

We went for a weekday lunch with family. Five of us in total — my parents, my sister, myself and the baby — arrived around 11:30am.

By 11:30, seats started filling up and customers kept coming in one after another. When we walked in, a table happened to be getting cleared, so we could sit down without waiting. Inside there are both table seats and floor seats, so you can eat however you prefer. It felt like a comfortable atmosphere for family groups or for bringing your parents along. A baby chair was also ready for us, which made visiting with the baby easy — though it was a chair without a tray.

If your baby isn't at the stage of eating solo yet, it doesn't really matter, but if you prefer a baby chair with a tray, it's worth knowing about in advance. I just strapped the baby in with a baby carrier :)

First order: dotorimuk (acorn jelly)

After sitting down, we ordered the main dishes and also added an order of acorn jelly (dotorimuk).

It came out before the main dishes, so we shared it as a family while we waited, and it was tastier than I expected. The sauce that came with the acorn jelly was especially good.

It had a sweet, tangy flavor that paired well with the jelly and did a great job of waking up our appetites. My family hadn't been all that hungry walking in for lunch, but eating a bit of the acorn jelly each naturally got our appetites going. It's a good light dish to have before the mains arrive, so if you're visiting as a family, it's worth ordering to share.

Snail bulgogi set and snail Hanwoo tteokgalbi set

The two main dishes we ordered were the snail bulgogi set and the snail Hanwoo tteokgalbi set. Neulbom is known for a range of Korean dishes, including snail wrapped rice (ureong ssambap), hot pot rice sets, bulgogi and Hanwoo tteokgalbi.

We could have ordered the hot pot rice too, but skipped it this time. With the baby along, we figured we wouldn't have the luxury of a long, relaxed meal, and having a piping-hot pot placed on the table also seemed a bit risky. So we went with regular rice instead, which actually made it easier to look after the baby while eating. If you're visiting as adults only, or have more time to spare, the hot pot rice is worth trying.

Are the side dishes any good at Neulbom?

Along with the main dishes, quite a few side dishes (banchan) came out as well.

Overall, the seasoning wasn't too strong, which I liked.

With so many heavily seasoned dishes around these days, this kind of clean, mild food is actually what I reach for most when eating with my parents.

Mixing the snail doenjang (fermented soybean paste) into the rice especially brought out a savory flavor that woke up my appetite. A spoonful of snail doenjang stirred into the rice was delicious even without any other side dishes, and paired with the banchan it made for a satisfying meal.

The bulgogi had a slightly sweet sauce that went well with rice, and the Hanwoo tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) was soft and mild, easy to share around the table.

We ordered two different dishes and shared them, which was nice because we got to taste a variety of flavors instead of just sticking to one dish.

Why Neulbom works with a baby along

Since this was a family meal with a baby, we cared just as much about parking, seating and ease of movement as we did about the food itself when choosing a restaurant. And on that front, Neulbom was pretty convenient.

First of all, parking is available in front of the restaurant, and with both table seats and floor seats, we could pick seating based on each family member's needs.

There was a baby chair ready, too.

It's worth noting the baby chair doesn't have a tray, but overall the basics for bringing a baby along were well in place. The restaurant is also positioned toward Bomun Lake Resort and Bulguksa, so it was a good spot to eat while sightseeing in Gyeongju.

Easier for a family trip than Hwangnidang-gil

Gyeongju often brings Hwangnidong to mind, but moving around there with a baby turns out to be trickier than it looks. Hwangnidong has lots of pretty cafés and restaurants, but many spots are small and cramped, and you often have to park and then walk a while to get there. Especially in summer, the heat can make walking long distances with a baby genuinely tough. So this time, we chose a restaurant that was easy to reach by car and had parking, keeping that in mind — and in the end, it made the meal much more comfortable for the whole family. There are also plenty of cafés and sightseeing spots nearby, so it was easy to move on somewhere else after eating.

A Gyeongju day plan that suits parents

Since we were visiting with my parents that day, we didn't pack too many stops into the schedule. We had lunch at Neulbom, looked around Chueok-ui Daldongne (a retro-themed village), and then had coffee at a nearby café.

Having a good Korean lunch, then a bit of sightseeing, then resting at a café made for a pretty nice family outing in Gyeongju with my parents.

Especially when traveling with both parents and a baby, it's much easier to take things slow — eating in one place and exploring nearby, rather than cramming in several sightseeing spots in a day. If you're touring around Bomun Lake Resort or Bulguksa, Neulbom is a solid choice for lunch before continuing on to sightseeing and cafés.

Overall, Neulbom in Gyeongju was a good fit when you want a clean, filling Korean meal rather than anything flashy or heavily seasoned. Ordering the snail bulgogi and Hanwoo tteokgalbi together to share worked well for the family, and with the acorn jelly and side dishes added in, it felt like a complete meal. Above all, for a visit like ours with both parents and a baby, the easy parking and seating were a big plus. If a lot of walking, like around Hwangnidong, feels like too much for your Gyeongju trip, or you're looking for somewhere your parents and kids can eat comfortably together, this kind of family restaurant is worth considering.
