Suwon Station Rodeo bar, octopus on chilled yukhoe: Yukhoe Dokjon
In short
Yukhoe Dokjon Suwon Station Branch is a Korean pub in the Suwon Station Rodeo area of Suwon, Gyeonggi, that has served nothing but yukhoe (Korean raw beef tartare) for more than 10 years. A regular since college days returned on a weekday for sannak hanwoo yukhoe, which is live octopus over hanwoo beef tartare, and loved the soft texture of the chilled, never-frozen beef and the black sesame-flavored sauce. The old unlimited cheese and seaweed refills are gone and now cost ₩1,000 extra, but Yukhoe Dokjon is still a yukhoe spot near Suwon Station worth recommending for both a first and a second round.

Yukhoe Dokjon: a beef tartare bar in Suwon Station's Rodeo area for 10+ years
Yukhoe Dokjon Suwon Station Branch (육회독존 수원역점) is a local yukhoe favorite in the Suwon Station Rodeo area that has stuck to one thing, yukhoe, for over 10 years. I wander around even in monsoon season, so this time I headed out to Yukhoe Dokjon 🤎
The Suwon Station Rodeo area has huge foot traffic and trends move fast, so shops open and vanish all the time, right? Yet Yukhoe Dokjon has stood firm for more than 10 years without chasing trends, on yukhoe alone 😸

Is Yukhoe Dokjon Suwon Station good for group gatherings?
Inside, the space felt cozy yet open and spacious. The tables aren't crammed together but nicely spaced, so you can talk without being bothered by noise around you.
That makes it great for a quiet evening for two, whether a couple or friends, and just as comfortable for company dinners with office workers near Suwon Station, club meetups or department gatherings. It was a weekday, and the customers were varied: couples in their 20s, office workers in their 30s and 40s, and people in their 50s. With easy-to-please food and comfortable seating, it's a Suwon Station hot spot that keeps getting group booking inquiries.

What we ordered: sannak hanwoo yukhoe with live octopus
What I ordered that day was sannak hanwoo yukhoe (yukhoe + live octopus tangtangi), a real specialty: fresh hanwoo (Korean beef) yukhoe topped with a whole wriggling live octopus! There's also hanwoo yukhoe bibimbap and hanwoo sushi, so it works for a first round, or you can keep it light with yukhoe or live octopus as second-round snacks. Recommended for both the 1st and 2nd round ~

Chilled hanwoo yukhoe, never frozen
They say the core pride behind Yukhoe Dokjon's 10+ years of popularity is that it serves only 100% chilled hanwoo yukhoe, never frozen. At cheap all-you-can-eat places or bars with a huge menu, the yukhoe is often rushed out rock-frozen, so it makes your teeth ache or has a dry, gritty texture that lets you down. Sometimes the meat thaws and gives off that gamey, funky smell too!

How to eat sannak hanwoo yukhoe: egg yolk, black sesame sauce and salt dip
The sannak hanwoo yukhoe comes neatly set with an egg yolk for richness, crisp, sweet julienned pear, sharp radish sprouts, and a special sauce for dipping. The sauce tastes kind of like a sweet black sesame sauce? and dipped with yukhoe it's sooo good! For the live octopus, I recommend just dipping it in the salt sauce!
First, pop the yolk and mix it in, then eat the yukhoe and octopus together. The sweet, chewy, crunchy live octopus and the mild, melt-in-your-mouth yukhoe blend in an odd, wonderful way, and the chewing fun multiplied 😆
The subtle nuttiness of sesame oil and the cool, clean sweetness of the pear back it up, so it's not greasy at all, and even though I was full, the drinks kept going down endlessly. It was a magical snack. ??? "Quitting drinking starts this week" ~ 😄

Instead of the dryness or teeth-aching chill of frozen meat, Yukhoe Dokjon's yukhoe has a faint coolness and soft texture that clings to your tongue. They say fresh hanwoo prepared that day is kept at low temperature and sliced lightly on the spot once an order comes in, so the freshness really stands out!!!

What has changed at Yukhoe Dokjon since my college days
Honestly, Yukhoe Dokjon was a yukhoe spot I went to a lot with friends since college... Back then, shredded pear and cheese came out generously by default and they refilled them without limit (not that we refilled more than 2 times, haha). Now prices have gone up a lot, so extra cheese and seaweed cost ₩1,000 each T_T Feeling those prices T_T Hang in there, owners!!!!
