Paju café with glass-railed rooftop and mont blanc cake: Four & More

Four & More (포앤모어) is a four-story Han River-view bakery café on Soraji-ro in Paju, Gyeonggi. On a drive, the writer sat at the 3rd and 4th floor windows and the rooftop outdoor tables looking out over the Han River, trying a blueberry cream cheese pie, a fresh cream mont blanc cake, drinks and a risotto. The risotto at Four & More is a little pricey, but the view, bakery and coffee quality make it a satisfying Paju café for a date or day out.

Family Korean BBQ at Gupabal Station with doenjang sulbap: Donmihyang

Donmihyang Gupabal Branch (돈미향 구파발본점) is a pork barbecue restaurant near Gupabal Station in Eunpyeong, Seoul, where staff grill the meat over charcoal from start to finish. On a family dinner with two kids, the writer ordered 2 servings of pork neck, gabeurisal (pork fatback), doenjang sulbap (rice in a rich soybean paste stew) and mul milmyeon (cold wheat noodles in broth). The meat and doenjang sulbap were very satisfying and the mul milmyeon was generous but a little bland. Donmihyang is a good Gupabal Station BBQ spot for a relaxed family meal without the work of grilling.

Gyodae Station kalguksu house after kids' art class: makgeolli, Daseon

Daseon Kalguksu Gyodae branch (다선칼국수 교대직영점) is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) restaurant near Gyodae Station in Seocho, Seoul, within walking distance of the Seoul Arts Center. After a weekend art class at the Seoul Arts Center with two kids, we dropped in by chance and ordered the makgeolli set of suyuk (boiled pork slices), assorted jeon (savory pancakes) and sea snail salad, with unlimited barley rice, a separate barley rice serving for the kids and two bottles of makgeolli. Daseon Kalguksu is a good stop on a Seoul Arts Center outing where kids eat well and adults can enjoy a light drink.

Euljiro second-round pub with creamy-foam Cass draft: Eulsam Hof

Eulsam Hof Euljiro Main Branch is a hof (Korean beer pub) in Euljiro 3-ga, part of Seoul's trendy "Hipjiro" area. The writer went to Eulsam Hof for a second round of Cass draft beer and light snacks during the Hangul Day holiday, and found the dense, creamy foam and smooth finish so good that there was no need to envy Japan's draft beer. Eulsam Hof is a second-round bar in Euljiro worth returning to for the beer alone.

Pungsan Station hair salon: flat-crown root perm + clinic, Hair Onsae

Hair Onsae (헤어온새) is a hair salon in Jungsan-dong, Ilsandong-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi, right in front of Pungsan Station. After a 1:1 consultation about a crown that lay flat against the head, the writer had a root perm and a hair clinic (conditioning treatment) at Hair Onsae. The writer says the crown kept its volume even with a rough towel-and-blow-dry and the hair felt softer. Verdict: the writer, a long-time salon hopper, was happy enough to settle on Hair Onsae for good.

Gimpo shabu kalguksu with kids 4 and 7, endless radish rice: Homilwon

Homilwon Shabu Kalguksu Gimpo Main Branch (호밀원샤브칼국수 김포본점) is a shabu kalguksu (shabu-shabu with knife-cut noodles) restaurant on Geolpo-ro in Gimpo, Gyeonggi, known for its sanghwang (phellinus) mushroom broth. With kids aged 4 and 7, the writer ordered the Hansang Gadeuk Special Sanghwang Shabu Kalguksu for 2, which came with unlimited beef mushroom radish rice, suyuk (boiled pork), spicy jjukkumi (baby octopus) and a dessert bar with caramel popcorn and misutgaru (roasted grain drink). Homilwon Shabu Kalguksu pleased kids and adults alike and is a solid pick for family meals out or three-generation dinners with grandparents.

Wondang garden café with kids: sandpit & iced Earl Grey, Baedagol

Baedagol Bakery House is a garden bakery café in Wondang, Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. On a weekend visit, the kids played in the sandpit area in the outdoor garden while the adults enjoyed mango bingsu (Korean shaved ice), an iced americano and an iced Earl Grey. Baedagol Bakery House is worth recommending to families who want a garden view, something for the kids to do and good desserts in one stop.

On a friend's recommendation, the writer visited Apple Smile on the crowded Hangul Day holiday. Despite the rush, a staff member picked the right size for her 7-year-old daughter, and she bought a pair of soft pink ruffle pants. For parents who want plain, neat daycare outfits, Apple Smile is a no-fail choice.

Seooreung Chinese restaurant with two kids: self-serve bean sprouts

Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung Branch (짬뽕지존 서오릉점) is a Chinese restaurant on Seooreung-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi, and a regular spot the writer has revisited many times with two kids. This visit included a large jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), mild and spicy jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and fried mandu (dumplings), with self-serve bean sprouts piled into the jjamppong, plus plum juice and omija tea after the meal. With hair ties on hand and plenty of parking, Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung Branch is a reliable Chinese restaurant for family meals with kids near Seooreung.

Seooreung Chinese restaurant for a family of four: summer kongguksu

Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung Branch is a two-floor Chinese restaurant on Seooreung-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. A family of four with two kids ordered jjamppong soondubu (spicy seafood soft tofu stew), jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), a small tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) and kongguksu (chilled soybean noodle soup), and the self-serve bar's kids' dishes and rice meant there was no waiting to eat. Having also tried a well-known jjamppong soondubu spot in Gangneung, the writer found the broth at Jjamppong Jijeon Seooreung Branch even better and now returns as a regular.
