Gunja Station bar for a second round: beef yukjeon, Saechamjip

In short

Saechamjip is a room-style Korean bar on Neungdong-ro in Gwangjin, Seoul, a 3-minute walk from exits 5 and 6 of Gunja Station. After dinner elsewhere, the writer came to Saechamjip for a second round of beef yukjeon (pan-fried battered beef) and a giant pollock roe mayo egg roll with beer, then finished with cream cheese chapssal juak (fried sweet rice cake) and injeolmi silk-thread patbingsu. Every table sits in its own room, so Saechamjip is an easy pick for small gatherings and group nights out.

Now that there's a bit of a chill in the air, isn't this the perfect season for cozy chats with close friends over good food and a drink? 🍺

I had a get-together with friends near Gunja Station a while back, and I found a place that blew me away from the vibe to the quality of the food — I had to come tell you all about it!

This is Saechamjip, a Korean bar with private rooms less than a 3-minute walk from Gunja Station exits 5 and 6 — about as close to the station as you can get.

Is Saechamjip's room seating near Gunja Station good for small gatherings?

Saechamjip's tables are set up like private rooms, so you and your group can focus purely on your own conversation. The moment I arrived, the clean, atmospheric exterior greeted me, and walking inside, the vibe was even better than I expected!

What I liked most was exactly that: since it's a room-style Korean bar near Gunja Station, the tables come in private rooms. At loud bars these days my throat always hurts from straining to hear the person across from me, but here we could focus on our own conversation in a private space — ideal for small groups or gatherings.

Heotgae water instead of plain water, plus a hangover stick per person

One more detail that showed just how thoughtful the owner is! As soon as we sat down, they brought out cold water — except it wasn't plain water, it was nutty, savory heotgae (raisin tree) water! And they generously handed out hangover-relief heotgae sticks for every person at the table. I was impressed before we'd even ordered.

Saechamjip's complimentary corn kernels and mukbap sabal

The complimentary side dishes deserve a mention too! Crispy, savory corn kernels you can't stop reaching for, and a cool, tangy mukbap sabal (acorn jelly soup) that comes as standard. The free snacks alone were so good I'd already finished a beer before the main dishes even arrived!

What's on the Saechamjip menu, from full meals to light bar snacks

Saechamjip's menu ranges from meal-worthy dishes like daedori-tang, nakgopsae, and bone grill to lighter snacks. We'd already had a filling dinner elsewhere first, so we ordered mostly lighter bar snacks for this second round 😋 Browsing the menu, the variety and the value-for-money prices really caught my eye!

From daedori-tang loaded with beef intestine and chicken thigh, to nakgopsae with an incredible broth, to bone grill glazed thick with sauce — there's a solid lineup of hearty meal-worthy dishes. Great for a first-round dinner, and just as good for a second-round hangout like ours, focused on the vibe!

Best with beer: beef yukjeon and the giant pollock roe mayo egg roll

Let me brag about a few dishes we enjoyed at this gathering.

Beef yukjeon: served fresh off the pan, still steaming, topped generously with spicy-sweet, tangy scallion salad. One bite of the savory, tender beef with crunchy scallions on top and any greasiness disappears, leaving pure savory flavor in your mouth — an absolutely perfect match for cold beer!

Pollock roe mayo giant egg roll: it grabs your attention with its sheer size before anything else! The fluffy, soft egg roll pairs harmoniously with the salty pollock roe mayo sauce, and biting into it while it's still warm, it practically melts in your mouth 🧀✨ Even with a full stomach, it had that addictive quality where you just keep eating it!

Desserts to end the night: cream cheese chapssal juak and injeolmi silk-thread patbingsu

Saechamjip's finishing desserts were cream cheese chapssal juak (sweet rice cake) and injeolmi silk bingsu (shaved ice). A drinking session just isn't complete without a sweet, cool dessert to wrap it up, right? :)

Cream cheese chapssal juak: cute and round, this one wins you over on looks alone! The glossy, chewy chapssal rice cake shell is packed generously with soft cream cheese inside. One bite and the sweetness and the cheese's savory richness burst in your mouth — it rivaled what you'd get at a proper dessert shop.

Injeolmi silk bingsu: this silk-thread shaved ice looks straight out of Instagram! The moment it touches your mouth, the delicate ice threads melt away, layered generously with savory bean powder, sweet red bean, and chewy rice cake. Eaten together with the chapssal juak, it made for a perfect finish.

💡 Booking tips and the verdict on Saechamjip

Oh, and apparently Saechamjip's house-milled signature makgeolli is famous for being delicious 🍶✨ We stuck with cold beer this time, but next visit I'm definitely trying that signature makgeolli!

Since it's a popular spot, I'd recommend booking ahead through Naver Place or Tabling before you go.
