I visited Haeseon, an aged sashimi spot near Sunae Station in Bundang :) Unlike an ordinary sashimi restaurant, it's a course-only place where you enjoy aged sashimi along with several other dishes. I was curious because for ₩40,000 per person you get not just sashimi but live octopus, yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), grilled fish, tempura and spicy fish stew. I was happy with how generous the course was. Let me walk you through the location, the interior and the aged sashimi course one by one.

Where is Haeseon near Sunae Station, and is there parking?

Haeseon's atmosphere and seating: good for group dinners?

Long, narrow interior of Haeseon
Softly lit 1st-floor seating at Haeseon

Haeseon is a long, narrow two-level space, so it has more seats than it looks from outside. From the street I assumed it would be tiny and cozy, but there were quite a few seats! Soft lighting and white marble made it feel clean and calm, quite different from a typical sashimi restaurant.

The 2nd floor holds about 12 people, which seems perfect for a team dinner. The cozy mood also makes it a good fit for dates or small gatherings. I came at 6pm on a public holiday, and from 7pm more customers arrived, mostly regulars, it seemed.

Haeseon menu and prices

Haeseon menu and drinks list

Haeseon has a single menu, the aged sashimi course at ₩40,000 per person, with drinks including sake, Hwayo, bokbunja, soju and beer. The course centers on aged sashimi such as flatfish and sea bream, served with several seafood dishes and warm dishes.

Aged sashimi means live fish is prepared and then rested at low temperature for a while to bring out its savory depth and texture. Haeseon also says it serves low-temperature aged sashimi in its course. I wondered how a ₩40,000 course would turn out.. haha

In what order does Haeseon's aged sashimi course arrive?

Beef porridge, miso soup and sea squirt

Beef porridge and miso soup, the first course

The course starts with warm beef porridge and miso soup. The miso soup had a deep flavor and was really good!

Sea squirt on a small plate

Next came bright orange sea squirt (meongge) on a small plate. I can't eat sea squirt, but my mom loves it, and she said it was fresh and tasted just like the sea! Then the star arrived: the assorted aged sashimi!

This is the amount of assorted aged sashimi you get with the 2-person course. Wow.. can you sense the size? The plating was a feast for the eyes and there was so much sashimi that my mom and I clapped like seals..!!

The slices were cut thick and had a nice chew. Aged sashimi tastes best with some thickness, and this was just the right amount.

I hope the photos show the quality of the sashimi.

Flatfish belly sashimi served with aged kimchi

The flatfish belly was sooo good!!! It came with aged kimchi (mukeunji), and eating them together refreshed my palate. Then the warm dishes returned: grilled king oyster mushrooms and grilled fish head.

Because warm dishes arrive between the sashimi like this, you don't get tired of it and it goes down even better T_T haha. The mushrooms were tasty, and the grilled fish was plump and delicious. And then came the live octopus and yukhoe!

Live octopus and yukhoe (Korean beef tartare)

Yukhoe was on one side of the plate and finely chopped live octopus on the other. Getting yukhoe in a sashimi course was a slightly different touch.

Live octopus and yukhoe on one plate

Eat the yukhoe and octopus together in one bite and it feels like dancing in your mouth. Really fresh and delicious. I thought we were done, but then shrimp tempura and fries came out.

The shrimp tempura and fries came together in a basket with ketchup. It tasted a little different from the shrimp tempura you usually get in sashimi courses: much nuttier and crispier. Perfect with beer.. And the course ends, of course, with maeuntang (spicy fish stew).

The maeuntang came in an earthenware pot full of red broth, with bean sprouts, green onion and other vegetables. Before it came out, we asked them to make it a little spicier, and it was totally hangover-soup material.

Nothing earlier in the course was spicy, so this stew felt like one last kick. I ended up reaching for a spoonful of rice... haha

Is Haeseon's ₩40,000 aged sashimi course good value?

Personally, I was really satisfied with Haeseon. I was slightly worried that getting aged sashimi plus 8 side dishes for ₩40,000 per person might mean lower quality. But no, every dish was excellent, and it was a great-value meal. The owner and staff were also very kind, so we had a lovely holiday evening.

I recommend Haeseon near Sunae Station to these people~!!
