Yesterday was a weekend but my husband had to work, so it was a Dongtan date with my daughter! I'd booked my 5-year-old's very first flower lesson nearby, so we stopped for lunch together beforehand.

The place I took my daughter for lunch was Yangpuni Kimchi Jjigae & Samgyeopsal, a Korean restaurant near Dongtan Central Park. The address is 36-13 Dongtanbansong3-gil, Dongtan-gu, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, and it's open 11:00–24:00 with no closed days, just a break time from 15:00 to 16:00.

At lunch people come for kimchi jjigae and easy Korean dishes, and at dinner it turns into a popular samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) spot! The downside — like most places around Dongtan Central Park — is there's no dedicated parking lot, only 2–3 spots right in front.

A bigger and cleaner Bansong-dong kimchi jjigae spot than I expected. I got there just before noon and it was still relaxed, but by around 1pm the place was nearly full. They also do takeout and delivery, so delivery riders kept coming in and out.

How much kimchi jjigae do you get in one 10,000-won metal bowl?

At this Bansong-dong, Dongtan kimchi jjigae spot, even the single serving comes in a big metal bowl, which is great. I added broth to eat the ramyeon noodles too!! If a single serving came in a small stone pot, you couldn't add noodles — but they fill this metal bowl to the brim. Super generous for ₩10,000.

Yangpuni, this Dongtan kimchi jjigae spot! Packed with meat, tofu and kimchi. I'd been craving a thick pork kimchi jjigae, and I came at exactly the right moment because it was so good. Spicier than I expected, which I liked, and the broth was genuinely rich. They load in that much tofu and meat too. Light eaters could easily share one single serving between two people!

Soy bulgogi, 8,000 won: the taste of a Korean truck-stop pork bulgogi

I wanted jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) too, but since I was having lunch with my daughter, I went straight for soy bulgogi as an add-on. You know that pork bulgogi at old trucker's diners? This is exactly that flavor. There's even a hint of smoky char — so good!

If the kimchi jjigae is the spicy red option, try the soy bulgogi too! It's sweet-and-salty with that char flavor on top, a hit with everyone. And ₩8,000 gets you a pretty generous portion!

Egg roll, 7,000 won: thick enough that my 5-year-old ate half

A must-order if you're eating lunch with a kid at this Dongtan Central Park Korean restaurant, haha. It's ₩7,000, but it's so big and thick you'll wonder how many eggs went into it!

Not just big — it's thick, and cooked so the inside stays soft. They give ketchup on the side, and overall it wasn't too salty, which made it easy to eat with young kids! My daughter, who's 5, ate half the roll by herself... lol.

Mom ordered the single-serving kimchi jjigae and happily worked through it with added ramyeon noodles. They'll top up the broth if you ask!
