Café-like pork soup spot at Busan Station, sundae soup wins: Yeongdong

Yeongdong Milmyeon & Dwaeji Gukbap is a milmyeon (Busan wheat noodle) and dwaeji gukbap (pork and rice soup) restaurant near Exit 7 of Busan Station in Dong-gu, Busan. On a chilly day the writer skipped the noodles for a boiled pork set (₩13,000) and sundae gukbap (Korean blood sausage soup, ₩10,000), and was pleased with the fresh side dishes and generous portion of boiled pork. The boiled pork set was tasty, but the sundae gukbap at Yeongdong Milmyeon & Dwaeji Gukbap was the best dish of the day.

Pork BBQ, Yeonsan, Busan: half-and-half galbi & white kimchi, Baekyang

Baekyang Sutbul Galbi Yeonsan (백양숯불갈비 연산점) is a charcoal-grilled pork galbi restaurant in a Yeonil Market alley in Yeonsan-dong, Yeonje-gu, Busan. The writer ordered the half raw, half marinated galbi set (600g) for 21,600 won, plus a yangpun-bowl kimchi stew and two 500-won Manim rice bowls, for 28,500 won in total, grilling the raw galbi first and then switching to a fresh grill plate via the kiosk for the marinated galbi. Verdict: Baekyang Sutbul Galbi Yeonsan is a fairly priced Yeonsan BBQ spot with good meat, a self-serve bar and comfortable seating.

Munhyeon Station, Busan shabu kalguksu with basement parking: Yunujae

Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu (윤우재 문현샤브 칼국수) is a shabu-shabu and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on the first floor of Daerim Munhyeon City Plaza in Munhyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan, where ₩11,000 per person gets 70g of sirloin, vegetables and mushrooms, homemade kalguksu noodles and fried rice. The writer parked in the building's basement garage, arrived after 12:30 on a weekday lunch, and ate shabu-shabu, kalguksu, extra sujebi (hand-torn dough) and fried rice. The verdict: the beef portion at Yunujae Munhyeon Shabu Kalguksu isn't large, but the quality is good and the homemade noodles are springy, making it a healthy, good-value lunch near Munhyeon-dong.

Cleanest pork soup restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, house kimchi: Geumsu

Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap Gyeongseong-Pukyongdae Branch is a dwaeji gukbap (pork and rice soup) restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan, near Kyungsung University–Bugyeongdae Station. On a first visit, a writer who eats gukbap often during the week ordered the dwaeji gukbap and the sundae gukbap (Korean blood sausage soup), 11,000 won each, and was especially pleased by how clean the restaurant was and by the kimchi and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) made with Korean-grown cabbage and radish. Verdict: Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap was the tastiest of the pork soup restaurants the writer had visited recently.

Quiet morning teppanyaki in Seomyeon, Busan: 3 meats ranked at Karen

Karen Lotte Department Store Busan Main Branch is a Taiwanese teppanyaki restaurant on B1 (Gourmet Street) of Lotte Department Store in Seomyeon, Busan, where a Taiwanese chef grills the meat on the teppan right in front of the counter seats. The writer visited early in the morning when it was quiet, ordered kimchi pork belly, chicken and emperor short rib, and ranked them kimchi pork belly first, emperor short rib second and chicken third. Karen's seasoning is on the strong side and may be too salty for children, but it is a good pick for an atmospheric meat meal in Seomyeon.

Gwangalli Japanese diner plum set for two + udon add-on: Daidokoro

Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch is a Japanese home-style restaurant on the second floor at the entrance to Gwangalli Beach in Suyeong, Busan. The writer ordered the plum set for two (39,500 won), which brought a karaage (Japanese fried chicken) set meal, tonkatsu curry and menbosha (fried shrimp toast), added a separate udon, and finished with milk pudding and a plum drink. Millak brunch café in Busan, burrata pomodoro: Working Holiday Millak

Working Holiday Millak is an ocean-view brunch café that occupies the whole 7th floor of the Badamaru building on Minraksubyeon-ro in Suyeong-gu, Busan, looking straight out at Gwangan Bridge. The order was the pomodoro (18,000 won) and the Big Brekkie (24,000 won) with two iced Americanos: burrata cheese kept the tomato pasta from tasting plain, and the avocado and scrambled egg plate was finished off completely. Parking is available in the Badamaru building and the café is still not crowded, so Working Holiday Millak is worth a visit if you want a quiet brunch near Gwangalli.
