This time I was craving spicy dakdoritang (Korean chicken stew) for lunch, so I headed to Sottture Dakdoritang in Seongjeong-dong, Cheonan. If you love dakdoritang, you've probably heard of this place before.

A late 1:30pm lunch at Sottture Dakdoritang in Seongjeong-dong
I visited around 1:30pm that day, and maybe because it was a late lunch hour, there weren't many customers, so I got to eat at a relaxed pace.
The restaurant was bigger and cleaner than I expected, so it seemed fine for a family meal, and it wouldn't be awkward for a group dinner or gathering either.

What I ordered that day was the whole chicken dakdoritang.
- Whole chicken ₩35,000
- Ramen noodle add-ons (2) ₩4,000
- Self-cooked fried rice (2) ₩4,000
- Drinks (2) ₩5,000
There were two of us eating, but with all the extras we added, it turned into a pretty hearty spread. Once you order, they start cooking it right away so it comes out piping hot.

As it started bubbling and the spicy sauce smell rose up, my appetite kicked in even though it was lunchtime. Above all, the cute egg-chicken sitting in the middle caught my eye.
A boiled egg decorated to look like a little chicken — it seems like a small thing, but this little touch was surprisingly cute.

How spicy is the dakdoritang broth at Sottture?
I think the reason Sottture Dakdoritang has become a go-to spot in Seongjeong-dong is really the broth. It was spicy but the kind of flavor where you keep dipping your spoon back in.

At first it's just spicy-hot, but as it kept simmering, the seasoning soaked further into the ingredients.

The chicken was especially soft. With dakdoritang, parts like breast meat can sometimes be a bit dry and disappointing, but the chicken here was tender and soft all around, which I loved.
There was almost no dryness at all — the meat came off softly, which also went great with rice.
Adding the ramen noodles partway through was also a nice touch — the spicy sauce soaked right into the noodles, which was a treat in itself. Since the broth itself was so good, adding noodles worked really well too.

Side dishes and free refills at the self-serve bar
I tried each of the side dishes that came with the dakdoritang. Everything was clean and simple overall, pairing well with the main dish. Eating the spicy dakdoritang and then having a bit of side dish in between felt like it cleaned up my palate, so I kept reaching for them.

Even when the main dish is on the intense side, places where the side dishes feel like an afterthought can be a bit disappointing, but here the side dishes were tasty too, so overall it was great. And since it's a self-serve bar, you can keep eating as much as you want.

Finishing the pot with self-cooked fried rice
After eating a good amount of the dakdoritang, you can't skip the fried rice, of course. I ordered two servings of self-cooked fried rice and fried it up thoroughly in the leftover sauce.

Since the dakdoritang sauce is delicious, the fried rice was naturally delicious too. The seasoning coated every grain of rice evenly, and even the slightly crisped bits were good to eat — even when I was already full, I kept going back for more. We'd already eaten the ramen noodles and were pretty full, but somehow the fried rice still found room, haha.
With two of us eating, we got to enjoy a whole chicken plus noodle add-ons and fried rice until we were completely stuffed.
