In short
Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch is a pork cutlet restaurant tucked in an alley off Dongyo-ro 38-gil in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul. Trusting an earlier visit and repeated delivery orders, the writer returned for the solo fillet katsu set with cold soba, trying it dipped in salt, salt with wasabi, and sauce for three distinct flavors. A repeat visit to Yeonnam-dong favorite Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch, with the story of the solo fillet katsu and cold soba set.

There are so many great restaurants in Yeonnam-dong that every time I go, I end up agonizing over where to eat. This time I went back to Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch, a place I loved on a previous visit and have ordered from delivery a few times since. Yeonnam-dong is full of new hot spots, so part of me wants to try somewhere different every time, but Katsu Monster Yeonnam is noticeably better than its other branches, so it's the place that comes to mind whenever I'm in the neighborhood.
This time I ordered the solo fillet katsu set with cold soba (naengmomil). Hearty pork cutlet plus cool cold soba together made for a really satisfying meal.

A Yeonnam-dong pork cutlet satisfying enough to revisit
I remembered enjoying my first visit, and this time it tasted just as good as I remembered.

I think a good pork cutlet comes down to the crispness of the breading and the juiciness of the meat — if the outside is crispy but the meat is dry, that's disappointing, and if the meat is tender but the breading is soggy, that's a letdown too. Katsu Monster's fillet katsu delivered everything I love about pork cutlet. Every bite had that great contrast between crispy crust and tender meat.
Fillet katsu with an irresistibly tender bite
The solo fillet katsu set I ordered this time was also an easy, unintimidating choice for eating alone.

Fillet katsu uses the tenderloin cut, so it's known for being relatively tender — personally I prefer the moist, soft bite of fillet katsu over cutlets made with loin, which can be a bit dry or slightly chewy, so I enjoyed this even more. The outside was golden and crispy, the inside soft and juicy, and that textural contrast was excellent. Each thick-cut slice had a nutty, savory flavor, and the generous thickness made for a hearty meal.

Trying it three ways: salt, wasabi, sauce
Dipped in salt, in salt with wasabi, and in sauce, it tasted completely different each time, so I got to enjoy a single dish in several different ways. That combination of crispy crust and tender meat is delicious no matter how you eat it. I get why I keep craving pork cutlet.
Cool cold soba that paired perfectly with the fillet katsu
Another thing I really enjoyed this meal was the cold soba.

Alternating between the crispy, savory fillet katsu and the cool cold soba made for a great combination. Eating pork cutlet continuously can start to feel a bit heavy, but the refreshing, clean cold soba in between kept my palate feeling light.
Even though the weather has cooled down a lot, lunchtime still hits around 30 degrees, so cold noodle dishes are even more appealing right now. The clean, refreshing flavor of the cold soba made the whole meal feel lighter. If you're like me and want both pork cutlet and a cold noodle dish without compromising on either, I'd recommend the fillet katsu and cold soba combo. Eating hearty meat and then refreshing your palate with cool noodles meant I never got tired of it, right to the last bite.
A solo set that works great for eating alone
I also appreciated that a solo set like the one I ordered was available.

When eating out alone, wanting to try multiple dishes but worrying about portion size is a common dilemma, so being able to enjoy katsu alongside another dish in one set was even more satisfying. Of course, it's not just for solo diners — it would also work well if you're visiting with a friend or partner and want to each order what you like. This time I chose fillet katsu and cold soba, but once the weather gets a bit colder, I'd love to try it with udon instead.
A great stop during a Yeonnam-dong date
Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch is a great Yeonnam-dong restaurant to visit when you want a hearty meal.

When you're out on a date or hanging out with friends in Yeonnam-dong, you end up eating a lot of café desserts, so before all that, there's nothing quite like a hearty pork cutlet meal. Crispy katsu is easy for anyone to enjoy, and pairing it with something cool like cold soba lets you enjoy the meal in even more ways.
I personally think a real favorite spot is one you keep coming back to because of good memories, rather than somewhere you visit once and never return to, and by that measure, Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch gave me another satisfying meal this time too.
