Jongno cocktail bar after dinner: ssanghwatang-like drink at Hanuk

Hanuk (HA NOOK) is a traditional-style cocktail bar on basement level 1 of 18 Samil-daero 19-gil in Jongno-gu, Seoul, near Jonggak Station. After dinner in Jongno, the writer stopped at Hanuk for welcome sujeonggwa (cinnamon punch) and yakgwa (honey cookie), a cocktail that recalled both coffee and ssanghwatang (Korean herbal tonic), tofu crisps with dried persimmon, and a performance that scents the drink with smoke. For a Jongno date where you want a quiet drink away from the busy Jonggak crowds, Hanuk is a good fit.

Open-door Goyang BBQ, ₩51,000 pork set and self-bar: Baekseok Kkogijip

Baekseok Kkogijip (백석꼬기집) is a Korean BBQ restaurant near Exit 6 of Baekseok Station in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. It is known for wide-open doors that give it a casual outdoor-dining feel, and for meat that is grilled in the kitchen and served ready to eat. The writer ordered the marinated Korean pork set for two (51,000 won), which came with hanwoo yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), steamed egg, corn cheese and doenjang (soybean paste) stew, and refilled side dishes at the self-serve bar. Baekseok Kkogijip suits anyone who wants a generous BBQ set in an open-air mood without grilling the meat themselves.

Pork neck BBQ in Nokbeon, Seoul: minari & aged kimchi grill, Yukjjeup

Yukjjeup Nokbeon is an aged-pork Korean BBQ restaurant in Eunpyeong, Seoul, between Nokbeon Station and Eunpyeong-gu Office. The writer ordered 2 servings of the signature thick pork neck, plus minari (Korean water parsley) and doenjang stew (soybean paste stew); staff grilled the pork neck, which came out like cube steak with a rosy cross-section and a juicy center. Yukjjeup Nokbeon is a good Nokbeon Station pick for grilling pork neck with minari, king oyster mushrooms and aged kimchi, then finishing with doenjang stew.

Ikseon-dong bakery, no weekday wait: mozzarella salt bread, Munhwa

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a takeout-only bakery in Ikseon-dong on Donhwamun-ro, Jongno, Seoul, near Jongno 3-ga Station. The writer arrived around 12:30 on a weekday with no wait and bought garlic bread, a red bean bun and an injeolmi bun (a bun inspired by soybean-powder rice cake). A salt bread from the review event was later filled with mozzarella and baked in an air fryer. With individual wrapping and bread sliced for easy eating, Munhwa Bakery is a handy snack stop for an Ikseon-dong outing or a Cheonggyecheon Stream walk.

Japanese restaurant in Euljiro 3-ga: solo lunch & Kirin beer, Hurato

Hurato Sikdang Euljiro (후라토식당 을지로점) is a Japanese gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) restaurant in Jung-gu, Seoul, in the basement of the Tower107 Building between Euljiro 3-ga Station and Chungmuro Station, where diners grill their own meat on a mini tabletop grill. For a solo lunch, the writer ordered the steak set (₩19,500) with Kirin Ichiban draft beer and a ₩1,500 onsen tamago, and especially loved pairing the steak with salt, wasabi and ginger. For a hearty solo lunch in Euljiro, the Hurato Sikdang steak set is well worth trying.

After-work ramen shop at City Hall Station: karaage & beer, Mentsuru

Mentsuru City Hall Branch is a Japanese ramen shop with mostly bar seating on Seosomun-ro near City Hall Station in Seoul. After work at 6:30 pm, the writer waited about 10 minutes and had spicy shoyu ramen (₩11,500), handmade karaage (₩7,000) and Asahi draft beer (₩8,000); pre-ordering at the kiosk meant the food arrived right after sitting down, and the manager's friendly service stood out. Mentsuru City Hall Branch is a solid pick for City Hall Station office workers who want solo ramen and a beer on the way home.

Euljiro 3-ga beer pub for six beers after a big dinner: Eulsam Hof

Eulsam Hof Euljiro Main Branch (을삼호프 을지로본점) is a retro draft beer pub on Supyo-ro, near Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Two people who had already eaten a big dinner stopped by Eulsam Hof for a second round and shared one potato salad with six beers, including Foam Foam beer, Sulsul beer and Lemon Hof. Eulsam Hof is a good second-round pub in Euljiro for sampling several draft beers without needing much food.

Bucheon fries shop: ₩20,000 Deep Crunch Box + 4 sides, Angry Potato

Angry Potato Hyundai Department Store Jungdong Branch is a chicken, mini burger, cheese stick and potato shop in the B1 food hall of Hyundai Department Store Jungdong in Bucheon. On a shopping trip, the writer took away a 20,000-won Deep Crunch Box with four extra sides: Hot Chili's Chicken, Hot Crunch Chicken, a Whole Mozzarella Cheese Stick and a Chili's Cheese Stick. Each item had a different texture, and the spicy Hot Chili's Chicken and the crispy-outside, chewy-inside Chewy Potato stood out, making Angry Potato a good pick when you want to try several menu items at once.

Ilsan soy crab buffet: Saturday lunch with Mom, ₩24,900 each, Deodeo

Deodeo Ganjanggejang Muhalliripil (더더간장게장무한리필) is an all-you-can-eat soy sauce crab (ganjang gejang) restaurant on Wondang-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, near Ilsan. The blogger and her crab-loving mom arrived around 1:30pm on a Saturday and had to wait. At Deodeo, 24,900 won per person covers soy sauce crab, spicy marinated crab and crab stew, plus steamed egg, flying fish roe, dried seaweed and side dishes. Deodeo's soy crab is less salty and packed with meat, well worth a return visit.

Euljiro 3-ga fusion restaurant with a Portuguese chef: octopus at Pyu

Pyu Euljiro is a new fusion pasta and wine dining restaurant near Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul, across from the Nine Tree Hotel. After receiving a table sign with the reservation name, the writer ordered the charcoal-grilled octopus with romesco (34,000 won) and the yuzu grilled chicken thigh (28,000 won), then finished with a cream latte. With striking plating, good flavors and soft lighting, Pyu Euljiro is an easy recommendation for dates, anniversaries and wedding-invitation get-togethers.

Hongdae steak restaurant: Yorkshire pudding wrapped in cheese, Brivit

Brivit Hongdae Yeonnam is a Western restaurant serving pasta, gnocchi and steak on the 2nd floor of the Mega Coffee building near Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station in Mapo, Seoul. The writer ordered the Brivit Signature Steak (₩37,900), a flat iron steak with cheese poured over it like a waterfall. The writer also had the mushroom soup with Yorkshire pudding; the bite-sized steak was cooked just right, and the Yorkshire pudding wrapped in the steak's cheese was especially tasty. For cheese lovers, the cheese steak at Brivit Hongdae Yeonnam is well worth ordering.

Eunpyeong ramen shop: Hapjeong's famous paitan without the line, Oreno

Oreno Ramen Eunpyeong (오레노라멘 은평점) is a ramen shop on Bulgwangcheon-gil in Eunpyeong, Seoul, opened by a ramen brand that became popular in Hapjeong, serving tori paitan and karai paitan ramen at ₩13,000 each. The writer, who once gave up on the line at the Hapjeong branch, waited only 5–7 minutes at 11:40 am on a Sunday; two people ordered both ramens with tsukune chashu and a soft-boiled egg, then enjoyed refills of noodles, broth, rice and kimchi. Oreno Ramen Eunpyeong is an Eunpyeong ramen shop where even big eaters leave full.
