QR ordering at a packed Suwon chicken restaurant: Haenggung Jangjak

In short

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is an old-style oak-fired whole chicken restaurant on Craft Street in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. Arriving around 6pm on a Tuesday, every table but one or two was taken, and the herbal oak-fired chicken at 23,000 won and a 500cc Terra draft beer at 5,000 won were ordered by table QR code, arriving as lean, grease-free meat with sticky rice packed inside. One chicken was more than enough to fill two people.

Where is Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, and where do you park?

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak sits near Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, on the Craft Street in Haenggung-dong. The closest parking is the Hwaseong Haenggung public street parking lot.

Hi everyone, today's post is about a chicken street favorite in Suwon. Honestly, I prefer roasted chicken over fried, so whenever I spot a whole chicken spinning slowly over a wood fire, I can't just walk past — and wouldn't you know it, while passing through Haenggung-dong I caught sight of an oak-fired chicken place. How could I resist? I had to stop and try it right then ₍ ⺣̤̬ ₎ ʰ ⁱ Let me introduce it to you all, let's enjoy it together -ᰔ Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak.

Near Suwon Hwaseong Fortress there's a Craft Street lined with shops selling handicrafts and souvenirs — this area used to have a lot of empty storefronts and felt pretty quiet. So a brand-new hit restaurant popping up here is genuinely interesting news .ᐟ

Seeing the mountain of firewood piled up in front of the shop, I honestly have no idea how many chickens they're roasting a day 🫢

Tuesday at 6pm: how busy is this Craft Street chicken restaurant?

I visited Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak around 6pm on a Tuesday, and it was full except for maybe one or two tables. Haenggung-dong is such a sure-fire tourist spot that on weekdays most restaurants tend to be quiet — so no wonder they need that huge pile of firewood out front - ̗̀ ꪔ̤̥ꪔ̤̮ꪔ̤̫ ̖́-

The menu: herbal oak-fired whole chicken for 23,000 won

What I ordered at Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak was the basic herbal oak-fired chicken at ₩23,000 and a 500cc Terra draft beer at ₩5,000. When you hear 'oak-fired chicken with herbal ingredients and glutinous rice stuffed inside,' you might assume it's a dish only older, traditional-palate diners would enjoy — but Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak actually has plenty of menu items, like corn cheese and spicy buldak sauce, that could win over younger palates too. They even do an oak-fired version of the wang-galbi tongdak (king short-rib chicken) that Suwon is known for!

There were plenty of tempting options, but since it was my first visit, I decided to go classic with the basic herbal oak-fired chicken. And of course, draft beer — you can't have chicken without it ꊞ ʕ⁰̈ʕ⁰̈ʔ ⁼³

I came straight from work still thirsty, and gulping down the draft beer fixed that immediately 🍻

Once my thirst was quenched, I finally noticed the trio of sauces and side dishes they'd set out.

I hate getting my hands messy when eating, and it's like the owner read my mind — they even gave me a fork and tongs to pick the meat apart. Using tools properly, now that's what makes us human .. . .웅웅 . .

Two hours over oak: how does the herbal roast chicken taste?

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak's herbal oak-fired chicken is apparently roasted for a full two hours over oak firewood. I noticed the faint oak smoke getting stronger and realized it was on its way to my table.

Even at a glance you can tell the grease is gone and the juices are locked in — it looks exactly like the light, savory, delicious kind of chicken 🤤

Just look at the size of that drumstick — you can tell they use big chickens.

It's not just about generous portions — roasting for a full two hours over oak firewood means the smoky aroma soaked all the way into the thick chicken breast! Thanks to the oak firewood, it wasn't an artificial smoky flavor but a gentle, spreading smokiness and depth of flavor — good, good . . . (* ¨̮*)/(*¨̮ *)/

The three sauces: honey mustard and yangnyeom chicken sauce

I fell for the flavor once, then fell again for the tender, moist meat . . 💛 With fried chicken, I usually don't bother with honey mustard sauce, but somehow with oak-fired chicken I keep dipping into it endlessly 😋

Switching it up occasionally with the yangnyeom (sweet-spicy) chicken sauce, I never got tired of it and kept going 〰️

Herbal sticky rice stuffed inside the chicken

Honestly, I think the real charm of oak-fired whole chicken is this sticky rice stuffed inside! It carries the herbal aroma, giving it a healthy feel, and the rice soaks up the juices too, making the texture moist and chewy — amazing . . . . And then there's the fun of scraping up the scorched rice stuck to the bottom of the pan .ᐟ

Have two people ever gotten this full off just one chicken before . . 🤔 I left satisfyingly stuffed thanks to this herbal chicken that filled me up even on the inside—

Final take: 80 seats for group dinners and team nights

Slow-roasted over an oak wood fire to strip away the grease while keeping the juices locked in! A Suwon favorite for old-style whole chicken with herbal ingredients packed all the way through — Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak ♡ With group seating for up to 80, it's perfectly set up for work dinners, gatherings, and family outings alike. If you want to enjoy the romance of chimaek (chicken and beer) in the cool autumn breeze, this place is worth a visit.
