Gwanggyo Japanese restaurant for fluffy hamburger omurice: Gyuen-dang

In short

Gyuen-dang Avenue France Gwanggyo Branch is a Japanese restaurant in Gwanggyo, Suwon, serving tenderloin gyukatsu and hamburger omurice. I grilled ₩24,000 gyukatsu over my own brazier and split open a ₩17,000 omurice full of silky egg. Gyuen-dang is a great pick for a solo meal, date, or family dinner with something a little special.

What We Ordered at Gyuen-dang

  • Tenderloin gyukatsu ₩24,000
  • Hamburger omurice ₩17,000
Japanese-style interior at Gyuen-dang Gwanggyo Branch

Gyuen-dang’s Gwanggyo branch is on the first floor of Avenue France. The sleek, modern Japanese-style interior felt really clean, which I loved for a Japanese restaurant. The cozy atmosphere also made it seem ideal for a family meal or date.

Cozy Japanese-style restaurant interior

Being in Gwanggyo, both the location and parking were so convenient. And it’s actually harder than you’d think to find a place that does gyukatsu and omurice properly in the Japanese style. They’re not easy dishes to make at home either—definitely dining-out food!

Gyuen-dang solo-dining zone and personal brazier

There’s also a perfectly set-up solo-dining zone, and I saw plenty of people eating alone. It gave me the courage to come back by myself someday. I still feel a little self-conscious about solo dining sometimes. (Maybe it’s just me.) It would be such a good Gwanggyo lunch, too.

What is this pretty little personal brazier? So cute. I wanted to take it home! Having one of these would be perfect for a simple drink at home.

Ordered dishes served on individual trays

Here come the dishes we ordered. They arrived neatly arranged on individual trays, looking as good as they sounded.

Neatly presented tenderloin gyukatsu set

Grilling Tenderloin Gyukatsu on the Brazier

I was surprised by how generous the tenderloin gyukatsu portion was. The thick cuts immediately got my appetite going, and it came as a neat set with cabbage and miso soup.

Tenderloin gyukatsu grilling on a brazier

The meat arrived only lightly fried on the outside, so I could grill each piece on the brazier to exactly the doneness I wanted. That was part of the fun, too.

How to enjoy gyukatsu

I carefully read up on the proper way to eat it, then got to grilling.

Gyukatsu grilling on a cast-iron plate

They say to flip it after 15–20 seconds, but I went by feel. The solid fuel had great heat, so the thick cast-iron plate warmed up nicely. I’d given up on this in Japan because the waits were so long, so I was thrilled to find such a great spot in Suwon.

Gyukatsu dipped in tonkatsu sauce

Dip the perfectly grilled gyukatsu in tonkatsu sauce and wow—the juices burst out, making my whole mouth happy. Yes, this is exactly the flavor!!!

Single-use Isigny salted butter

They provide single-use butter packets, which is convenient hygienically, and Isigny salted butter is delicious anyway.

Tenderloin gyukatsu with butter

Delicious plus delicious—it could only be a winning combination. I had such a fun dinner for a change. The moist, tenderloin gyukatsu was truly the best.

Juicy gyukatsu and pickled radish

The juices were so much richer than regular tonkatsu, and I was seriously impressed. The pickled radish that came with it also cut through the richness just right for my taste, making it even better.

Gyukatsu with wasabi and white rice

The best finishing touch for gyukatsu is definitely a little wasabi on top, eaten with hot white rice. What a dream pairing. It’s the kind of flavor that keeps calling you back—I couldn’t stop.

Cabbage with sesame dressing

I normally eat lots of cabbage, and the nutty sesame dressing with cabbage? Absolutely knockout, haha. If you run out, you can ask for a refill, so I ate plenty.

The Moment You Split Open the Hamburger Omurice

How do people make omurice like this? I fail every time... It was so plump and pillowy. This is practically art! With a delicious hamburger steak underneath that chubby omurice, this combination was truly unbeatable!

Plump omurice with hamburger steak

They give you omurice sauce, too, and once you pour it all around, it’s game over.

Hamburger omurice topped with sauce

I’d fully learned the best way to eat the omurice, too. I’m someone who gets a thrill from splitting things like this open beautifully.

Moist omurice before being split open

I shall split your belly open beautifully. Even looking at it again, it’s really art.

Omurice opened to reveal soft egg

I cut down the middle and spread it wide, and silky soft egg came flowing out. Scrambled eggs are so good when they’re this moist, right? This was the elevated version... So tender. It just slipped right down my throat.

You have to mix it properly with the sauce and dig in. I think I could eat omurice every day if someone told me to! It’s a flavor I’d never get tired of. So good.

Omurice mixed with sauce

Taking a big bite with the moist hamburger steak brought out a happy smile all on its own.
