Sokcho market stall, Set No. 11 microwave reheat: Hwangbuja Twigim
In short
Hwangbuja Twigim is a squid sundae (stuffed squid sausage) and tempura stall at stalls 26-27 in Sokcho Tourist Fisheries Market, Gangwon. Set No. 11 (squid sundae + nurungji squid sundae) at 20,000 won and nude shrimp + red snow crab meat tempura at 10,000 won were packed to go, kept in the accommodation fridge and reheated in the microwave as a late-night snack, and the nurungji still had its crisp chew. I came to Hwangbuja Twigim, the squid sundae (stuffed squid sausage) spot everyone talks about in Sokcho's Jungang Market — here's my review!!

Where is Hwangbuja Twigim and how do you get there?
Hwangbuja Twigim, a well-known spot in Sokcho's Jungang Market, is located at 16 Jungang-ro147beon-gil, Sokcho. It's in stalls 26-27 of Sokcho Tourist Fisheries Market.
Hwangbuja Twigim

Hwangbuja Twigim, the squid sundae place in Sokcho's Jungang Market, sits inside the market — just search it on Naver Maps and the directions come up clearly, so I found it easily haha.

Hwangbuja Twigim menu: set combos and what nude shrimp means
The menu ranges from squid sundae to all kinds of tempura, so I pulled the menu board photo from Naver for you to browse easily.
There are various set menus — king shrimp, red snow crab meat, nude shrimp, squid tempura, and a mixed tempura set combining all three — plus regular squid sundae, Abai sundae, and nurungji (scorched rice) squid sundae, all combinable haha. Just a heads up: king shrimp tempura is fried shell-on, while nude shrimp tempura is fried without the shell, so keep that in mind when ordering. You can order as a set or à la carte haha.

How to order and pay at Hwangbuja Twigim, and how long you wait
Hwangbuja Twigim has seats inside so it's good for dining in too haha. We were getting takeout, so we grabbed the menu from the owner on the right side of the shop and ordered and paid there.

After paying, they write your order number on a slip of paper like this, and you line up in order to collect it haha. We visited on a Sunday afternoon when the market was packed, which felt a bit risky, so I'd recommend standing in a single line!

Which parking lot takes the discount voucher?
With purchases over ₩15,000 you get a discount voucher for the public parking lot across from Sokcho Jungang Market — a 30-minute discount! Note this only works for the public lot across from Jungang Market, not the underground lot at Sokcho Tourist Fisheries Market!

Nurungji squid sundae grilled on the griddle to order
This is the famous nurungji squid sundae spot that's even been on TV, so I was already looking forward to it.

They cook it right when you order, so it smelled great and the quality was solid haha.

Our nurungji squid sundae, sizzling away. It's way tastier than the regular squid sundae, so I really recommend ordering it haha.

We took it to go and reheated it in the microwave, and it was plenty tasty even with just the microwave, so keep that in mind when you order!

While waiting, you can also check out the food models — baby crab tempura, bukkumi (sweet rice pancakes), memil jeonbyeong (buckwheat crepe rolls), and various tempura — it was fun to look around.

How does Hwangbuja Twigim pack takeout orders?
They pack it neatly in a yellow bag so nothing spills — the squid sundae is wrapped in plastic and placed at the bottom, while the tempura goes on top in an open-topped paper bag so it doesn't get soggy. They also gave us several packets of soy sauce and chopsticks!
Reheating the takeout in a microwave for a late-night snack
We brought it back to our accommodation, kept it in the fridge, and pulled it out to reheat as a late-night snack haha. The visuals were insane and the smell was amazing too.

We ordered squid sundae + nurungji squid sundae for ₩20,000 and nude shrimp + red snow crab meat tempura for ₩10,000 — the portions were generous and the quality was great.
I prefer shell-off shrimp tempura over shell-on, so I think ordering the nude shrimp tempura was the right call haha.

Crispy outside, moist inside — an air fryer would be ideal for reheating, but since we were at a pension we used the microwave instead; if you like it crispy, it's also good eaten cold haha.

For ₩10,000, the red snow crab meat tempura and nude shrimp tempura were both huge and generously portioned, which I loved.

Set No. 11: squid sundae and nurungji squid sundae compared
Next up, let me show you the squid sundae. This is Set No. 11 — squid sundae + nurungji squid sundae.

The best way to reheat is on a frying pan or in an air fryer, but we substituted with the microwave!

But even after microwaving, the nurungji texture was still there, so it was really tasty haha.

We stuffed ourselves from lunch through dinner barbecue and sashimi, and it all still went down easy — because it was just that good. If you're looking for a squid sundae spot in Sokcho's Jungang Market, why not check out Hwangbuja Twigim?
