Yeonnam-dong cocktail bar with movie cocktails and sofa seats: Bar

In short

Bar Catalyst is a cocktail bar on the 3rd floor of a building in a Yeonnam-dong alley in Seoul, about 470m from Hongik University Station Exit 3. Four friends reserved the sofa seats in advance and ordered cocktails inspired by the films Wall-E and About Time, classics like the Rusty Nail and Manhattan, plus grilled brie and crème brûlée. The movie cocktails arrive with their own props, making Bar Catalyst a good fit for a group night out or a Yeonnam-dong date.

I went to Bar Catalyst in Yeonnam-dong with friends to celebrate a new job (a Korean tradition called "cheongmo"). Since we were meeting as a group of four, I wanted somewhere we could talk comfortably, so I booked a sofa seat in advance. The vibe was great, but what really got me was the range of drinks — from cocktails inspired by movies to classic cocktails — so we ended up trying a bunch :)

How to walk to Bar Catalyst from Hongik University Station

Bar Catalyst is about 470m from Exit 3 of Hongik University Station. It's tucked inside a Yeonnam-dong alley, on the 3rd floor of the building.

Inside Bar Catalyst: the sofa seats for four

Walking in, the dark wood tones and soft lighting gave off a classic, moody atmosphere. Rows of bottles lined the back of the bar — exactly the cocktail bar vibe I'd pictured in my head.

The reserved 4-person sofa seating and table

Since we came as a group of four for our celebration, we'd reserved a sofa seat ahead of time. It was comfortable for long conversations, and the tables weren't crowded together, so this section works well if you're coming with a group. At the bar seats, I noticed a few solo customers and couples in between.

Bar Catalyst's menu: classics and movie cocktails

Looking at the menu, there was a huge range — from classic cocktails to ones inspired by movies. The classics were even organized by alcohol content, which is handy if you're not into strong drinks. Since there were four of us, we each ordered according to our own taste :)

What we ordered that day: Rusty Nail, Jack Rose, About Time, Wall-E, Manhattan, Aviation, orange juice, plus grilled brie and crème brûlée as snacks.

The complimentary snack at Bar Catalyst

Starter snack plate with chocolate, crackers, and sesame sticks

First came a simple starter plate with chocolate, crackers, and sesame sticks, along with a dipping sauce. We picked at it while waiting for our cocktails — dipping the crackers and sticks in the sauce was surprisingly addictive.

Movie-inspired cocktails: Wall-E and About Time

The Wall-E cocktail

Pink Wall-E cocktail served with movie figurine props

The one that caught my eye most was the cocktail modeled after the movie Wall-E. It's a pink-hued drink made with hibiscus gin, lemon, syrup, and bitters, and it came with little Wall-E and EVE figurines set alongside it. Taking photos with the two props next to the cocktail was so cute haha. It wasn't just a movie name slapped on the menu — actually getting the props too made it fun.

The About Time cocktail

About Time is made with gin, mandarin purée, lemon, bitters, honey, and tonic. The mandarin gave it a refreshing fruity aroma, and the vivid orange color was really pretty too. This one also came with a movie-related prop. Since we came with friends who love movies, reading through the menu descriptions and picking which movie cocktail to try was part of the fun.

Four classic cocktails compared

Besides the movie cocktails, we ordered several classics too.

Rusty Nail made with Scotch whisky and Drambuie

The Rusty Nail, made with Scotch whisky and Drambuie, had a sweet aroma but felt quite heavy — very different from the fruitier cocktails we'd had before it.

Manhattan cocktail in a cocktail glass

The Manhattan, made with American whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, also had a strong whiskey character — better suited to whiskey lovers than to those who prefer something light and sweet.

Reddish Jack Rose cocktail

The Jack Rose, with its pretty red color, is made with Calvados, lime, and pomegranate syrup. It's sweeter and tangier than the whiskey-based cocktails, so it'd suit people who don't love a strong whiskey nose.

Aviation cocktail made with gin and lemon

The Aviation, made with gin and lemon among other things, had a bright, refreshing lemon flavor. With several cocktails ordered at once, each one a different color and glass shape, the table looked pretty spectacular. The friend who doesn't drink ordered orange juice.

Food and dessert: grilled brie and crème brûlée

Grilled brie topped with a generous amount of nuts

We also ordered grilled brie to go with the cocktails. It came loaded with nuts — almonds, walnuts, cashews, macadamias — piled on top and around the cheese. The soft cheese with nuts was nutty and rich, and paired really well as a cocktail snack.

Crème brûlée with a caramelized sugar top

At the end, we also got crème brûlée. Cracking the caramelized sugar top revealed a soft cream underneath — perfect when you want something sweet after a round of cocktails.

What is the restroom like?

Clean, well-kept restroom sink at the bar
Mouthwash and cotton swabs provided in the restroom

One thing I personally appreciated: the restroom was really clean. Some bars fall short on that front, but this one was well kept. The sink had hand wash and hand lotion, plus mouthwash and cotton swabs set out separately. Being able to rinse with mouthwash after drinking was a nice small touch I appreciated.

Is Bar Catalyst worth a visit in Yeonnam-dong?

Table full of various cocktails

Visiting Bar Catalyst with friends for our celebration, the sofa seats made it easy to chat comfortably, and what stuck with me most was the cocktails inspired by movie scenes and music — props included. There are separate bar seats too, and the lighting is soft enough that it'd also work well for a Yeonnam-dong date or a blind date. If you're looking for a cocktail bar with good atmosphere in Yeonnam-dong, this one's worth checking out :)
