Suwon Station gastropub dinner with rice and side dishes: Manseokjip

In short

Manseokjip Suwon Station Branch is a gastropub on the second and third floors of a building on Maesan-ro near Suwon Station in Suwon, Gyeonggi. This visit was for a filling meal rather than drinks, and the signature dishes eaten alternately with rice turned out mild enough in seasoning to keep the chopsticks moving. On a day when nothing else near Suwon Station sounds right, Manseokjip is an easy, filling choice for a group.

What we ordered at Manseokjip

I sat down, looked over the menu, and ordered what I felt like eating. Choosing the menu at a restaurant is honestly the hardest part sometimes haha.

When you're hungry, everything looks delicious, but once you actually have to order, you end up agonizing over what to pick. On days like that, ordering the signature dishes or the most popular items tends to be the safest bet.

After ordering, it wasn't long before the dishes started coming out one by one. Once the food was laid out on the table, my hunger somehow got even worse. Food really does need to be right in front of you.

Starting the meal with rice

Overall, the food at Manseokjip Suwon Station Branch wasn't overly salty or intense — it was the kind of seasoning that pairs well with rice, which made for a satisfying meal. I dug in as soon as the dishes arrived.

Since we were eating several dishes together, I didn't get tired of any one flavor and could switch between them. A bite of one dish, a spoonful of rice, a bite of another side — eating this way, the rice disappears fast.

The dish that steals the rice

Personally, I think the most important thing at a restaurant like this is how well the food pairs with rice. No matter how tasty a dish is on its own, if it doesn't go with rice it falls a bit short as a meal — but everything I ate that day at Manseokjip Suwon Station Branch tasted even better eaten together with rice.

The seasoning was just right, so putting a little food on a spoonful of rice made me keep going. Even when my stomach was already fairly full, I kept thinking 'maybe just a bit more?' and my chopsticks kept moving.

How the side dishes pair with it

Eating only the main dish nonstop can get a little tiresome, but adding side dishes changes things up. Something salty pairs well with a fresh or crunchy side, and something plainer pairs well with a well-seasoned side — the balance works out nicely.

I tend to eat a little bit of various side dishes, so I alternated between the mains and them. Switching up the combination like this makes a single meal feel surprisingly abundant.

A filling meal, finished

As we ate, the dishes on the table kept disappearing one by one. At first I wondered, 'can I really finish all this?' since I was so hungry — but people really do get strong in front of food haha.

I just kept eating, and it kept going down. Eating it together with rice especially filled me up more than I expected. Good for lunch, good for dinner — nothing lacking either way.
