Jeongjeong-a Sikdang Jeongwang Branch is an old-school Korean restaurant in Jeongwang-dong, Siheung, Gyeonggi, best known for its dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew). Two friends had lunch there with set menu 4 — seafood pancake, cockles and muchae (acorn jelly noodle soup) — at 30,000 won plus 1,000 won for a bowl of rice, 31,000 won in total, and all three dishes were generous enough to leave food behind. With a wide hall and roomy tables, Jeongjeong-a Sikdang Jeongwang Branch suits both a quiet lunch for two and a large group dinner.

Caffeine-free persimmon tea at a Seoul coffee shop: Mudeungdowon

Mudeungdowon is a retro hand-drip coffee shop in an alley near Seongbuk Stream in Seoul, between Seongshin Women's University Station and Bomun Station. On a weekend morning visit with a friend, a dark roast americano, caffeine-free persimmon leaf tea and a cardamom bun came to about 9,000 won per person, with no wait and a seat facing the shelf of LPs. Evening persimmon bingsu (shaved ice) at a Chang-dong café: Uisagye

Uisagye is a café in Dobong, Seoul, occupying a whole building from basement to 3rd floor, right by a walkway called Uicheon. Visiting one weekday evening with a coworker, the writer ordered snowflake ice persimmon bingsu (shaved ice dessert) and iced tea, where finely shaved ice, persimmon, condensed milk and yakgwa (honey cookie) came together to melt away the summer heat. Each floor has its own seating concept, so it's a great spot to pick whichever mood suits you.

Gwanghwamun, Seoul café for Matilda cake and americano: Center Coffee

Center Coffee Gwanghwamun is a specialty café in the basement of Seoul Finance Center, between Gwanghwamun and City Hall stations right by Cheonggyecheon stream. Visiting with a close friend after dinner, they had the Matilda chocolate cake for ₩8,200 alongside an iced americano and a caffe latte, spending under ₩10,000 per person. The rich but not-too-sweet chocolate cake paired beautifully with the full-bodied coffee.

Hoegi burger lunch for three, 29,400 won: 1986 Shibuya Burger

1986 Shibuya Burger is a handmade burger restaurant within walking distance of Hoegi Station, in front of Kyung Hee University in Dongdaemun, Seoul. I had three burger combos with two friends for ₩29,400; the Golden Jambon Wagyu Burger stood out for its jambon, patty, and sweet caramelized onions, while the self-service bar was a useful touch.
