Today I'm sharing my visit to Center Coffee Gwanghwamun, well known as a coffee spot in the Gwanghwamun area. After eating with a close friend, we wanted dessert, so while looking for a nearby café we headed to this place I'd been curious about for a while.

I'd heard they roast their own specialty beans, so I was curious about the coffee, and I really wanted to try the Matilda chocolate cake it's known for. The moment I walked in, the space felt much bigger than I expected. Even though it's in the basement of Seoul Finance Center, there was no cramped feeling at all — it was open and spacious, with wood-tone interiors and soft lighting creating a calm mood. It was a weekday afternoon and there were plenty of nearby office workers, but it wasn't noisy; quiet music played in the background, making it good for both conversation and solo time.

The space was kept clean all the way to the back, and the staff were friendly, so even on a first visit ordering felt easy. You could see the baristas brewing coffee right at the counter, which gave it a real specialty café feel.

From the moment the cake was cut, you could see the fine, dense crumb, which raised my expectations. The Matilda chocolate cake had just the right firmness, easy to eat with a fork, and even though it was rich chocolate, it wasn't greasy — the finish was clean.

It wasn't overly sweet, so it balanced really well with the iced americano. Paired with the caffe latte, the milk's nuttiness matched the chocolate nicely, and both worked in their own way. It made a perfect after-meal dessert, and both coffees had a heavier body rather than acidity, which paired well with the rich dessert.

There were semi-open seats with partitions and round tables for sitting comfortably face to face, so you could choose depending on group size or situation. There were also standing-style bar seats, which looked good for a quick solo coffee stop. On a weekday afternoon there was no wait to get a seat, and the noise level was low, so it seemed to suit dates, group meetups, or solo café time equally well. The restroom, located at the back of the store, was also clean and easy to use.

What really sets this café apart is the bean-sniffing corner where you can see and smell the beans yourself. Each bean came with a card noting its tasting notes, so you could reference the aroma and flavor before choosing. Drip bags and beans were also nicely displayed for purchase, which would make a good gift for coffee lovers. If you enjoy discovering your bean preferences, this corner alone is reason enough to visit, and I'd want to come back each time the seasonal beans change.

It opens early and stays open until evening on weekdays, and opens a bit later on weekends, so it's worth checking hours before you go.

Wi-Fi worked well inside and you could connect instantly via QR code, and with plenty of outlets it was a good place to stay a while with a laptop. Parking is available through the SFC Mall parking garage due to the building's setup, and since there's no reservation needed, you can just drop by and order at the kiosk without any hassle. Next time I visit, I want to try the Greek yogurt bowl and the brewed coffee.
