Today I'm sharing my review of Naegohyang Jeju in Bangbae-dong, where my boyfriend and I went because I really wanted proper grilled hairtail. As a restaurant specializing in Jeju regional food, it let us enjoy sea-fresh sashimi and seafood, thick grilled hairtail, and braised mackerel with radish that tasted just like home cooking, all in one sitting.
Naegohyang Jeju, a Korean restaurant in Bangbae-dong, serves a generous spread centered on Jeju-style fish dishes. We chose the Halla-san set meal, and the table was seriously packed — aged sashimi, abalone sashimi, sea squirt, grilled hairtail, braised mackerel with radish, seafood doenjang stew (soybean paste stew), abalone hot pot rice, and a whole lineup of side dishes. The quiet, pleasant Jeju-style interior was lovely too, and I'd recommend it for a date, a family meal, or dining with parents.
Where Naegohyang Jeju is in Bangbae-dong, and what the room feels like
Naegohyang Jeju is on the basement level at 93 Dongwang-ro, Seocho-gu, Seoul. My boyfriend and I were searching for a Jeju restaurant that really nails grilled hairtail, and this Bangbae-dong spot caught our eye — the idea of enjoying a full Jeju spread in the middle of the busy city was exciting. Hearing that the owner is a former five-star hotel chef made me even more curious about the food before we arrived.
The Jeju mood was already there on the stairs going down to the restaurant. The walls and various corners were decorated with what looked like basalt brought from Jeju, and stone walls held haruban (Jeju stone grandfather statues) and fruit ornaments.
The interior, using wood and stone, felt warm without being overdone — it was like stepping briefly into a restaurant in Jeju while still being in Seoul.
The place looked like it hadn't been open long — clean and pleasant overall. The tables were spaced comfortably, making it a good spot for a quiet meal.
Besides the main hall, there's a separate private space, which would suit family gatherings, meals with parents, or hosting important guests.

What the Halla-san set meal includes and what it costs
We ordered the most generous of the set menus, the Halla-san set, at ₩48,000 per person. Watching the table fill up, I genuinely didn't know where to start with my chopsticks. Fresh aged sashimi, abalone sashimi, sea squirt, other seafood, grilled hairtail, braised mackerel with radish, seafood doenjang stew, abalone hot pot rice, fried fish and fried sweet potato, and a variety of side dishes came out one after another.

How were the thick grilled hairtail and braised mackerel with radish?
The first thing that caught my eye in the Halla-san set was the huge grilled hairtail. The flesh was much thicker than I expected, so every bite had a proper moist texture. The outside was grilled golden brown and the inside was tender, with a seasoning that was salty with a subtle sweetness — great with rice.
The quality of the salt served on the side was impressive too. When I wanted to taste the hairtail's natural flavor, I dipped it lightly in salt; when I wanted more seasoning, I could adjust to taste.
It wasn't a grilled fish where the sauce did all the talking — you could taste the fish's own clean flavor alongside it, which made it even more satisfying.

How fresh were the aged sashimi, abalone and sea squirt?
The aged sashimi felt like it was made from good cuts. It had a springy yet calmly aged texture, and with abalone sashimi and sea squirt alongside, the flavor of the sea felt even deeper. If you love fish dishes, you'll be glad you don't have to stop at grilled and braised dishes — you get to enjoy sashimi too.

The braised mackerel with radish really stuck with me too. It had that comforting taste, just like the braised mackerel I ate at home as a kid.

The mackerel was fresh and the flesh didn't fall apart, and the radish was firm just enough while the seasoning had soaked in deeply. With a sweet-salty sauce that made me want to mix it right into my rice, this was truly a rice thief of a dish.
The seafood doenjang stew was clear yet deep in flavor. The umami from the seafood had naturally seeped into the broth, and it wasn't too intense, so it paired well with the fish dishes. After going back and forth between the grilled hairtail and the braised mackerel, a spoonful of the warm broth made the whole meal flow more comfortably.

Perilla oil abalone pot rice and the side dishes
The abalone hot pot rice was another must-try. After scooping the abalone rice out of the pot, I drizzled on the perilla oil that came with it and mixed it — the nutty aroma really came alive. The savory abalone rice balanced out the salty fish dishes, so I kept eating happily right to the end without getting tired of it.
The side dishes weren't an afterthought either. Cucumber salad, kimchi, seaweed, eggplant, white kimchi — each one paired well with rice and helped reset the palate. Even though the set was centered on fish and seafood, the whole table felt so balanced that it never felt like I was eating just one thing over and over.
If you're looking for a Korean restaurant in Bangbae-dong, I'd especially recommend Naegohyang Jeju to anyone who loves Jeju-style fish dishes. Beyond familiar dishes like grilled hairtail and braised mackerel with radish, you also get to enjoy aged sashimi, abalone sashimi, sea squirt, seafood doenjang stew, and abalone hot pot rice all together, which made for a very satisfying meal. It's great for a date, and it's also a solid, tidy spread to bring your parents to.

What to check before visiting Naegohyang Jeju
