Recommending a Haenggung-dong, Suwon restaurant, The European — a spot known for wood-fired pizza and fresh pasta.

If you're looking for a good-atmosphere restaurant in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, I'd strongly recommend The European.

What makes The European Haenggung Main Branch different: an oak-only wood-fired oven
Haenggung-dong has so many good restaurants and cafés that it's hard to decide where to go, but this is the only place where you can enjoy both wood-fired pizza and fresh pasta together.

The flavor of wood-fired pizza changes quite a bit depending on the type of wood used, and what's special about The European Haenggung branch is that they use oak, and oak only!

Inside The European Haenggung: atmosphere and group seating
The restaurant had an upscale European feel, and with group seating available, it's a good pick not just for dates but for group gatherings too.

What I ordered were three things: mortadella pistachio wood-fired pizza, truffle mushroom funghi pizza, and beef ragu pasta!

Mortadella pistachio pizza
First up was the mortadella pistachio pizza. Even the visual was clearly different from a typical tomato-sauce pizza.

The nutty flavor of pistachio blended with the soft, clean taste unique to mortadella, giving an overall impression that was pretty gentle and smooth.

What stood out most, though, was the dough. Baked in the wood-fired oven, the edges were crispy and crunchy while the inside stayed chewy, getting more savory with every bite. The contrast between the crispy outside and chewy inside was really good.
Pistachio can easily come off too strong or greasy, but paired with the mortadella, the nutty flavor carried through naturally.

It wasn't the kind of flavor that ends after one slice — more the type you keep reaching for. If dough is what matters most to you in a pizza, this one will really satisfy. The subtle aroma from the oak wood fire added something an ordinary oven pizza just can't match.

Truffle mushroom funghi pizza
Second was the truffle mushroom funghi pizza. I personally love the mushroom-truffle combo, so I had high expectations — the clean, moist texture of the mushrooms combined with truffle aroma for a pretty intense flavor.

A mushroom-focused pizza can end up tasting a bit flat if not done right, but here the distinctive truffle aroma anchored the flavor so it never felt bland.
The subtle umami you get biting into the mushrooms paired really well with the savory dough from the wood-fired oven.

The European's pizza always wins me over the moment I eat the edge crust. The outside was crispy while the inside was chewy and springy, making it fun to chew, and thanks to the oak wood fire, the savory flavor came through pretty intensely.

If you find strong truffle aromas a bit much, this one might not be for you, but if you like truffle and mushrooms, I'd recommend it. Where the mortadella pizza was on the nutty, soft side, the funghi pizza had a clearer mushroom-and-truffle aroma — two different kinds of charm.

Beef ragu pasta: fresh noodles with a poached egg
It felt like a waste to only order pizza, so we also got the beef ragu pasta. The key point of this dish was that it uses fresh house-made pasta.

Compared to regular dried pasta, you could clearly feel the soft, chewy texture unique to fresh noodles. The sauce was a tomato-based beef ragu style, so the umami of the meat and the acidity of the tomato blended nicely together.

Bursting the poached egg on top and mixing it into the sauce made the whole dish much smoother. The richness of the yolk softened the tomato's acidity a touch, making the ragu taste even thicker and creamier.

The beef ragu itself had plenty of meaty flavor, and it made for a great menu combination alongside the pizzas.

The ragu sauce soaked well into the chewy fresh noodles, so every bite carried a good balance of sauce and pasta, and switching back and forth with the pizza kept things from getting repetitive.

Is The European worth it for wood-fired pizza in Haenggung-dong, Suwon?
The European Haenggung branch impressed me most with the texture of the dough baked in the oak wood-fired oven. The outside was crunchy and crispy, the inside chewy and savory — good enough that I felt like I could eat the dough on its own.

The mortadella pistachio was nutty and soft, the truffle mushroom funghi had an appealing mushroom-and-truffle aroma, and the beef ragu pasta, with its fresh noodles and poached egg, made for a hearty, satisfying dish.

If you're looking for a date-night restaurant in Haenggung-dong, or a wood-fired pizza restaurant in Haenggung-dong, Suwon that can seat a group,

this is a place worth visiting at least once. Especially if you love a crispy-yet-chewy wood-fired pizza dough, you'll likely leave very satisfied.
