Cheongju tteokbokki restaurant beer set: Bubuduri Tteokbokki
In short
Bubuduri Tteokbokki is a tteokbokki restaurant in Bongmyeong-dong, Cheongju, Chungbuk. I filled up on a set of soupy wheat-rice-cake tteokbokki, fish cake, sundae, and drinks for under ₩20,000. Verdict: a seriously good-value spot for both drinks and a meal.

Bubuduri Tteokbokki in Bongmyeong-dong’s dining alley

Bubuduri Tteokbokki is right in an easy-to-spot location in what you could call Bongmyeong-dong’s dining alley.
Inside this snack bar where everyone has a drink

Did the interior get a little refresh? The vivid orange decor feels like a proper bunsik (Korean snack-food) place, yet everyone was having a drink.
What tteokbokki and meal options are there?

They originally only had soupy tteokbokki, but now there are so many varieties: mala tteokbokki, rosé tteokbokki, and gourmet tteokbokki too. They have added proper meal dishes such as bulgogi fish-cake udon, udon bokki, and pork cutlet, so it seems like a good place to come eat alone as well.

There are two types of fish cake: regular and red fish cake. If you want something spicy, I recommend the red fish cake.

The soupy tteokbokki is sweet, spicy, and full of broth, made with wheat rice cakes. Since they are wheat rather than rice cakes, they are wonderfully chewy.

They have fried snacks too.

For takeaway, order at the kiosk; for table orders, use the tablet! It has become so convenient.
Fish-cake broth at the self-service bar

You can help yourself to danmuji (pickled yellow radish) and fish-cake broth at the self-service bar. The evenings are just turning cool and chilly now, and sipping hot fish-cake broth while waiting for tteokbokki is heaven.

Self-service bar haul. Lots of scallions in the broth—love it!
Tteokbokki, fish cake, sundae, and drinks set

The set includes tteokbokki, fish cake, sundae (Korean blood sausage), and drinks. And it is under ₩20,000! These days, one basic drinking snack costs ₩20,000, but you can eat until full here, making this an incredibly good-value place for both drinks and a meal.

I do not usually like fish cake in tteokbokki that much, but it had soaked up the sauce so well that I ended up eating it all.

The red fish cake is not intensely spicy either, so you can enjoy it with a nicely balanced kick.

The sundae comes with gan (offal) by default, so let them know in advance if you do not want it. I much prefer dipping sundae in tteokbokki broth to fried snacks—it is so good.

I had such a filling, satisfying meal at Bubuduri Tteokbokki, this Cheongju bunsik tteokbokki spot.
