In short

After work, I tend to need something delicious to shake off the day’s fatigue. Yesterday, while my husband and I were deciding on dinner, we thought of Deo Chadol in Gwacheon and headed over right away. When I think of duck, I usually think of plain grilled duck or marinated duck, so this was my first time trying duck brisket-style grill—and I was curious. It turned out to be much better than I expected.

As it turns out, it was featured on KBS’s Baedalwa Suda on actor Ryu Seung-ryong’s recommendation. I was even more excited to hear that it was selected as an excellent restaurant in Gwacheon in 2024 and received an excellence award. Apparently, plenty of celebrities have visited too; there were so many autographs displayed inside that it was fascinating. After visiting myself, I could see why people count it among Gwacheon’s standout tastes.
Deo Chadol Gwacheon location and parking

It is a standalone building, so it is easy to spot even from a distance. There is a generously sized dedicated parking lot right in front, which made driving there easy. We arrived around 7 p.m. and still found seats; perhaps because it was a weekday evening, we walked straight in without waiting. There may be a wait on weekends or at dinner time, so I would recommend making a reservation in advance.

As you would expect from a duck specialist, the menu was quite varied, with plain grilled duck, marinated duck, brisket-style grill, and even soup dishes. Since there were two of us, we ordered the couple set so we could try a bit of everything.

The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) could be swapped for seafood egg soup, so we briefly debated it, but went with the doenjang jjigae. Looking over the menu, we agreed that we should come back during the day next time to try the lunch special.
Visiting with my husband after work

The first thing I noticed when we entered was that it was more spacious than I expected. The tables in the main dining area were laid out with plenty of room, and there were separate private rooms farther inside, so it looked suitable for family gatherings or work dinners too.

The side dishes and basic settings are self-serve, so it was nice to refill whatever we needed comfortably.

The basic sides included cabbage salad, kimchi, perilla leaves, and ssammu (pickled radish wraps). There were not a huge number of options, but it felt like everything essential was there. The meat arrived soon after we ordered, so we could start eating without getting tired of waiting.

What the duck brisket-style grill tasted like

The duck brisket-style grill came first, along with mushrooms, onion, and minari (water celery). It was sliced thinly, so it cooked quickly as soon as it hit the grill. I loved that there was hardly any waiting.

When I tried a piece, the duck’s naturally nutty flavor came through even without seasoning. It was not greasy and had a clean, light quality, so I kept reaching for more.

Dipped in the house sauce, it gained an extra layer of savory depth, and that was more to my taste. My husband said eating it plain let the meat’s own flavor stand out more. Wrapped with minari, its fresh aroma came through nicely, and we enjoyed it right to the end without feeling overwhelmed by richness.

Fresh marinated duck, doenjang jjigae, and fried rice
Once we had eaten a fair amount of the brisket-style grill, they cooked the fresh marinated duck for us. The seasoning had soaked in deeply, but it was not aggressively spicy or salty—just pleasantly savory—so both my husband and I ate it easily. There were rice cakes and vegetables in it too, which added a nice chew. Those who do not handle spicy food well might find it a little spicy. It tasted even better wrapped in a perilla leaf with the marinated duck and ssammu, which added another fragrant note.

We also had spoonfuls of doenjang jjigae between bites of meat, and its earthy broth went so well with everything. Whenever my mouth started to feel a little rich from the meat, the stew refreshed it, so I kept coming back to it.

As we were finishing the meat, they brought over the fried-rice ingredients, which we stir-fried in the remaining sauce. You know how it feels a little disappointing not to have fried rice after barbecue! Every grain was coated in seasoning, and I think I will keep thinking about that nutty, salty flavor. We polished off a whole plate between us and said tonight’s dinner was a success, haha.

Things to know before visiting
Overall, it was good, but tables in the main dining area, unlike the private rooms, were a little close together. If you want a quiet conversation, I think it would be better to reserve a private room in advance. Also, the couple set felt slightly generous for the two of us, so I do not think you need to add bowls of rice separately.
Why it was great for an after-work dinner date
This visit showed me that Deo Chadol in Gwacheon is a place where you can enjoy duck in a slightly different way. Being able to try the light brisket-style grill and spicy marinated duck at once made the couple set perfect for two. If you are looking for an easy dinner-date spot after work, I would recommend giving Deo Chadol a try. Parking is convenient, so it is great for driving, and on a weekday evening you probably will not need to worry too much about waiting. For a family gathering or group meal, reserving a private room in advance will make the experience more comfortable. Next time, I am planning to reserve a room and return with my family.
