Pre-grilled gopchang at Gwangju Seoul Gopchang, a Suncheon restaurant

In short

Gwangju Seoul Gopchang Suncheon is a gopchang (grilled beef intestines) restaurant in Suncheon's Yeonhyang 3 District, an offshoot of a 70-year-old specialist from Gwangju Songjeong. The 70-Year Specialty Set brought mild (non-spicy) grilled gopchang that arrives already cooked over a small flame under the plate, keeping the table clean and the meat free of any off smell, plus ammbong sundae (blood sausage) and cream sundae gukbap made with pasta noodles. The cream sundae gukbap sounded odd but won us over, and Gwangju Seoul Gopchang Suncheon is an easy recommendation for gopchang in Suncheon.

Gwangju Seoul Gopchang, a beloved 70-year-old restaurant from Gwangju Songjeong that has since expanded to Busan, Daejeon and Seoul, has now opened a branch in Suncheon — so I went to check it out!

Instead of grilling the gopchang (beef intestines) yourself, it comes out already grilled and clean-looking. And surprisingly, the cream sundae soup — a combo I wouldn't have expected to work — was delicious, along with the ammbong sundae (blood sausage). Here's my review of this Suncheon gopchang spot, Gwangju Seoul Gopchang 🎶

Where is Gwangju Seoul Gopchang Suncheon, and what are its hours?

Gwangju Seoul Gopchang Suncheon is located at 28 Palma 4-gil, 1st floor, in Suncheon's Yeonhyang 3 District. It's open Monday through Saturday from 16:00 to 23:00, with last order at 21:30, and closed every Sunday.

Inside Gwangju Seoul Gopchang Suncheon: why there is no grill on the table

The interior is spacious and clean. With plenty of tables, it seems great for anything from a date to a group dinner or company gathering. Since the gopchang comes already grilled, there's no grill plate on the table, so it stays clean and the restaurant never fills up with smoke or smell.

Menu and set options at Gwangju Seoul Gopchang Suncheon

The signature grilled gopchang comes in mild and spicy versions, and there's also ammbong sundae, beef gopchang hot pot, and several gukbap (soup with rice) options: meat gukbap, offal gukbap, spicy offal gukbap, and cream sundae soup.

They also have set menus, which are a good way to try a variety of dishes at a reasonable price. I ordered the 70-Year Specialty Set, but since my friend can't handle spicy food, I asked to change the gopchang to the mild version!

Basic side dishes of kimchi, kkakdugi, and pickled perilla leaves
Wrap vegetables: onion, garlic, and chili peppers
Seasoned salt, chojang, and doenjang dipping sauces
Plate of lettuce and perilla leaves for wraps

The basic side dishes include kimchi, kkakdugi (radish kimchi), pickled perilla leaves, and lettuce wraps with onion, garlic, chili peppers, perilla leaves, lettuce, seasoned salt, chojang (vinegar chili sauce), and doenjang (soybean paste).

Anything you run short on is generously restocked at the self-serve bar!

Ammbong sundae: more blood pudding than glass noodles

The ammbong sundae came out first! Waiting until the other dishes arrive before taking photos is a blogger's duty, but since the owner said it tastes best eaten while hot, I couldn't help but dig in first haha.

Ammbong sundae is blood sausage stuffed into pork bung. I love blood sausage packed with more blood pudding than glass noodles, so this was right up my alley. This is what real sundae tastes like~~ No off flavor, just delicious.

Especially the parts with thick bung, which are extra chewy and even more delicious. This one's mine!

And in Jeolla-do, dipping sundae in chojang is the unwritten rule!!! For all you Seoulites dipping in salt — thank goodness Gwangju Seoul Gopchang went up to Seoul to teach everyone to dip sundae in chojang instead haha.

Finally the grilled gopchang and cream sundae soup arrived — here's a group shot. One row of sundae had already made it into my stomach haha.

Mild grilled gopchang: how it looks when it arrives pre-grilled

Grilled gopchang (mild version). Since it's served already grilled, they light a small flame under the plate to keep it from cooling. The glossy sheen on it looked amazing — this visual was exactly why I wanted to come here~~

It's not just about looks — the gopchang was chewy with a satisfying texture, and its savoriness paired with the sweet-and-salty sauce made for a delicious bite. Zero off flavor! The more I ate, the more I kept thinking the spicy version must be even better. Next time I'll come back for that!

Wrapping it in lettuce too~~ Personally, since the gopchang has a slight sweetness, I found it paired really well with raw onion. I kept refilling onion from the self-serve bar and inhaling it haha.

Cream sundae gukbap: the fusion bowl with pasta noodles

And then the cream sundae soup!!! My friend wanted to try it, so we ordered it, and the owner said it's actually quite popular among younger diners.

It arrived bubbling in a stone pot, looking almost like a perilla seed soup haha. Honestly, 'cream sundae soup' sounded like a mismatch, so I took the first spoonful skeptically — but it worked way better than expected. This is actually good...? It's a smooth, creamy broth spiked with cheongyang chili and pepper for a spicy kick that cuts through the richness.

True to its name, it's loaded with sundae, meat, and bung, just like a regular sundae gukbap — but it also has pasta noodles in it, making it a total fusion dish! It was hot and filling. I'd definitely recommend trying this one haha.

Is Gwangju Seoul Gopchang Suncheon worth a visit?

The signature grilled gopchang, the handmade ammbong sundae loaded with blood pudding, and the surprisingly good cream sundae soup — I enjoyed all of them. I'd recommend Gwangju Seoul Gopchang Suncheon as a gopchang spot in Suncheon!
