Dongmyeong-dong bar with rice makgeolli, private rooms: Ju Myeongdang

In short

Ju Myeongdang is a fusion Korean late-night restaurant with six private rooms on Jangdong-ro in Dongmyeong-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju. On an autumn evening we took a private room and ordered the Samchon Suljang set for 49,000 won with Gooksoondang rice makgeolli, which brought beef yukjeon (pan-fried beef), straw-fire seasoned galbi, straw-fire pork and pepper fritters, yukhoe yubu-chobap (raw beef on seasoned tofu pouches), cheese potato jeon and doenjang sulbap to one table. With no break time, service until 1:30am and one hour of parking covered at the ACC lot, Ju Myeongdang works just as well for group nights out as for dates.

I went and thoroughly enjoyed makgeolli and a full drinking table at 'Ju Myeongdang,' which has become a must-visit spot in Dongmyeong-dong lately ∩^ω^∩ It's a place with no break time, so you can enjoy fusion Korean food and even day drinking — a good-looking Dongmyeong-dong bar with private rooms.

Both Ju Myeongdang's signature dishes — Imo Babsang and Samchon Suljang — have great composition and good value, and they're tasty enough that many people stop by as part of their Gwangju trip. It's a bar in Gwangju with a great atmosphere, perfect for a fusion Korean spread with drinks on the side.

Especially since the meal and drinking snacks include straw-fire meat, it's not just a typical bar spread — the taste itself is guaranteed, which made me trust the place and look forward to it even more.

With good-quality meat grilled directly over open flame, this is a spread that will absolutely make the drinks flow. And with generous service for waitlisted or Naver-reserved guests, there was no reason not to go — a Dongmyeong-dong bar worth visiting.

Inside Ju Myeongdang: six private rooms and window seats

From the stairs leading up to the second floor, Ju Myeongdang already has that traditional Korean tavern feel that foreigners would probably love too — it caught my eye right away. Both inside and outside are spotless✨

The interior is spacious with plenty of private rooms, and the cozy atmosphere made a great first impression. Looking out through the window at the back, the heart of Dongmyeong-dong was laid out right below us — I never knew a place like this existed, and the bar was so pretty that I really loved it.

The owner and staff were friendly and helped us find a comfortable seat, so after some thought we settled into a private space.

The retro vibe blends well with various other concepts, showing off that it's a Dongmyeong-dong spot specializing in fusion Korean food.

There are high chairs and the restaurant is clean, so it's a great Gwangju spot to visit for family gatherings with kids and parents, Gwangju trips, or hangouts with friends — whatever the occasion calls for!

The Ju Myeongdang menu, from day drinking to 1:30am

With no break time, it's stress-free to enjoy day drinking any time — a real Dongmyeong-dong hotspot.

We visited in the evening wanting to sip makgeolli, soak up the autumn breeze after a while, and enjoy a delicious drinking spread, so we ordered one of the signature menus — Samchon Suljang — along with Gooksoondang rice makgeolli.

Gooksoondang rice makgeolli and drinking cups

For evening dining, Samchon Suljang, Imo Babsang, and Gujeolpan (nine-section platter) are the representative dishes, and there's a wide range of à la carte items too, so you can cover drinking snacks and a full dinner in one visit without needing to move locations or eat separately elsewhere — great for group meetups or company dinners in Dongmyeong-dong.

What's in the 49,000-won Samchon Suljang set for 2–3 people

This is the recommended signature menu for 2–3 people, Samchon Suljang. Beef yukjeon (pan-seared beef), straw-fire galbi, pepper fritters, doenjang sulbap (soybean paste rice soup), yukhoe yubu-chobap (tartare-stuffed fried tofu rice), and cheese potato jeon all come out together on one generous table.

Everything looked so appetizing and thoughtfully arranged, with a great mix of dishes to try — it was perfect. The lineup was exactly right for pairing with drinks, and with the doenjang sulbap included, we could fill up on a proper meal too. No need to order soup separately — such great value having it all included!

It even felt like getting an early taste of the upcoming Chuseok holiday spread hahaha. The Imo Babsang comes with bossam (boiled pork wraps), kimchi jjigae, bibimbap, and naengmyeon, so it's different from the drinking set — just pick whichever you're craving. The Gujeolpan lets you enjoy Korean beef and sashimi at the same time. For groups, it seems great to try a variety of menus at once, and with reasonable pricing, it's worth recommending as a meetup spot.

A neatly arranged, tidy Korean drinking table made with care, and makgeolli made it even better✨

Doenjang sulbap, straw-fire galbi and yukhoe yubu-chobap, dish by dish

I tried the warm doenjang sulbap first, and it was indeed the mark of a Dongmyeong-dong spot worth visiting. The rich, savory soybean paste soup was loaded with tofu and vegetables, so I could handle both a meal and a drinking snack at once — it soothed my stomach ahead of time and felt hearty.

And with makgeolli, it's an unbeatable combo! With the retro atmosphere too, this is a Dongmyeong-dong bar where the drinks really hit right.

While eating, my eyes kept wandering around, and I spotted what looked like a young Jang Dong-gun! I wasn't sure at first, but looking again and again, it really did seem to be him?! It gave off a sense of time passing, and I was amazed his looks held up unchanged even back then — it looked like such an old-school photo shoot that I couldn't help but laugh.

While we were enjoying our meal, more and more customers kept coming in, and I really felt how popular this bar is in Dongmyeong-dong. Even with a lot of people, the space is divided up so it's never noisy or disruptive — comfortable for spending time at ease. It was great for a cozy drink, and even the hall (not just the rooms) had such a nice atmosphere that I want to try sitting by the window next time.

The domestic galbi was glistening with sheen. Grilled with care over Damyang rice-straw fire, so the aroma alone was on another level.

The straw-fire grilled galbi was the dish I was most looking forward to among everything, and once I tried it, the salty-savory seasoned galbi had a subtle straw-fire aroma soaked in, giving it great depth — perfect as a drinking snack too.

And when you think of Jeolla-do Gwangju, you can't skip yukjeon, right?! We even got freshly pan-fried yukjeon, making for a really full lineup — eating it, I thought, at this price, being able to try all these dishes together really is a steal for the Samchon Suljang.

Close-up of thick straw-fire seasoned galbi

The meat was thick and the portion just right, nothing lacking. And among fritters, I especially love pepper fritters, and here they came out big, and the taste was excellent~~! Even the pepper fritters weren't ordinary — they were straw-fire meat and pepper fritters, crispy without being greasy, with a clean flavor.

Every single dish was substantial and delicious, but the one I enjoyed most was the yukhoe yubu-chobap.

The yukhoe (beef tartare) seasoning was tasty and fresh, and the rice cake pieces were huge, so I split it into four bites. What filled the fried tofu pockets wasn't just plain rice but bibimbap mixed with julienned radish, so it was moist and savory all the way through.

The potato jeon was crispy and nutty too, making it a great drinking snack.

Fresh cabbage and lettuce wraps were provided as well, rounding out the Samchon Suljang nicely. With minari (water celery) salad, radish pickles, onion pickles, kimchi and more side dishes made with care, true to a Korean tavern, this was a perfectly composed set — I highly recommend it as the signature dish to try at Ju Myeongdang in Dongmyeong-dong.

Who is Ju Myeongdang best for?

The Chuseok holiday starts tomorrow, and this is a great spot for gathering with friends or family, with private rooms making it perfect for building precious memories — Ju Myeongdang in Dongmyeong-dong. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is cozy, making it a popular Dongmyeong-dong bar for date nights too, so I'd recommend booking ahead and making sure you get the full service.
