Chungjang-ro Korean restaurant for group dinners in Gwangju: Jeongdam

In short

Jeongdam Gusicheong Main Branch (정담 구시청본점) is a two-story Korean restaurant and bar serving soy-braised oxtail stew in the Chungjang-ro and Gusicheong area of Dong-gu, Gwangju. The soy-braised oxtail stew came with tender oxtail and a salty-savory sauce that goes best with rice, and the open kitchen, sanitized tableware and generous seating stood out. Jeongdam is worth remembering for a group dinner or a family meal with parents.

I was looking for a place in Gwangju's Dong-gu area to eat well and have a drink, and that's how I found Jeongdam!

Why we ordered the soy-braised oxtail stew

This time, craving something a bit more special than my usual go-to dishes, I ordered the soy-braised oxtail stew (ganjang sokkori-jjim) at Jeongdam.

Guide to Jeongdam's menu offerings

Oxtail stew is a dish that's quite a hassle to prep and cook at home, from cleaning the meat to the actual cooking, so it's easier to enjoy it properly at a specialty restaurant. Jeongdam in particular was much bigger than I expected, which made it look like a solid option not just for a regular meal but for group dinners or family gatherings too.

Interior of Jeongdam spanning up to the 2nd floor

The restaurant actually spans up to the 2nd floor, and overall it felt quite spacious, so visiting with several people wasn't a concern at all. Coming for a small meal is nice, but when seating matters — like for a big group dinner or a family gathering — a spacious layout like this is definitely convenient.

If you're looking for a Chungjang-ro restaurant and bar in Gwangju where you can eat properly and also enjoy drinks, a place like Jeongdam with a strong signature dish seems like a good choice.

What Jeongdam's soy-braised oxtail stew tastes like

The dish I ordered was the soy-braised oxtail stew! It arrived generously plated, and just looking at it felt hearty and satisfying. Being soy-based, it wasn't overly spicy but had a salty, umami sauce that went well with the oxtail.

Oxtail in particular needs to be braised for a long time to really bring out that characteristic tender texture, and here the meat wasn't tough at all — it was soft and easy to eat. There's also the fun of picking meat off the bone, and getting to taste both the chewy bits and the tender meat together gave it a different charm from a typical braised short rib dish.

The soy sauce seasoning also practically called for rice. The oxtail was already well-seasoned enough to enjoy on its own, but eating it with rice made the meal much more satisfying. It wasn't a dish that was spicy just for the sake of it, so it felt like something even parents could enjoy comfortably, making it a good fit for a family meal out too.

If you've been looking for a good oxtail stew restaurant in Gwangju, this is worth a visit at least once. Since it's not a dish you come across often, it works well for a special dinner, and it's also great to enjoy slowly as a drinking snack.

A full meal and drinks in one place

What I liked most was that the oxtail stew lets you handle a meal and drinks at the same time. Starting out eating mostly the meat, then mixing in rice along the way made it hearty, and it was also a great dish to slowly enjoy alongside a drink.

If you've had the same routine meals near Gusicheong every time you have plans there, this dish might be a nice change. For anyone looking for a good restaurant near Gusicheong in Gwangju, especially those who love meat dishes or want something a bit different, this should be a great fit.

Is Jeongdam good for group dinners and family gatherings?

One thing I personally liked about Jeongdam was, again, the spacious layout. No matter how good the food is, some places just aren't comfortable for group visits, but here the space extends up to the 2nd floor, so it felt roomy overall.

On top of that, since it's an open kitchen, you could really feel how seriously the owner takes cleanliness!

It also seems like a great fit for all kinds of occasions — gatherings with friends, work group dinners, and even family meals with parents. When you're looking for a place several people can visit together, the size of the restaurant matters just as much as the menu, and Jeongdam clearly has that advantage.

The soy-braised oxtail stew paired sweet-and-salty soy sauce seasoning with tender oxtail, and it worked well as a hearty meal with rice. In the evening, it also pairs nicely with drinks as a bar snack.

If you're craving oxtail stew, which isn't a common dish around Chungjang-ro and Gusicheong, or looking for a spacious restaurant where a group can gather comfortably, Jeongdam is worth remembering. It's a good spot to visit whether you're after a Chungjang-ro restaurant and bar in Gwangju, a good restaurant near Gusicheong, or an oxtail stew restaurant in Gwangju. Next time, I'd like to come back with a group and properly enjoy the soy-braised oxtail stew with drinks.
