I recently took a trip to Gwangju, Jeolla-do. My friend and I were looking for somewhere quiet to have a drink and ended up at Jumak Inho, said to be a local favorite. It's a traditional Korean tavern serving Korean fusion snacks alongside traditional liquors, and visiting one in Gwangju made the trip feel even more like a real getaway. Today I'll tell you about Jumak Inho, a good-vibes bar near Geumnam-ro in Gwangju, and the best makgeolli of my life that I had there.

Jumak Inho location, seating and reservations

Jumak Inho, a Geumnam-ro favorite in Gwangju, sits just two minutes' walk from Geumnam-ro 5(o)-ga Station. Access from the station is so good, and since it's a bar, I'd recommend public transit over driving anyway — there's no dedicated parking lot, so you'd have to use a paid public lot. You can book via Naver, and since there are only about 4 tables inside, reserving ahead seemed like a good idea if you're coming with a group.

What is Jumak Inho like inside?

The inside of Jumak Inho, a good-vibes bar in Gwangju, stood out for its relatively bright lighting and calm interior despite being a drinking spot. The owner handles everything alone, from cooking to serving, so instead of a loud, packed bar taking in tons of guests at once, it felt more like a small omakase counter where each table gets real attention.

The day I visited, it was mostly office workers drinking after work, which really confirmed the local-favorite reputation. Even though the space isn't big, the overall mood is quiet but comfortable enough to chat easily — it'd work well not just for friend gatherings but for dates or blind dates too.

How to order at Jumak Inho, and what we ordered

At Jumak Inho, a Geumnam-ro favorite in Gwangju, you order via a QR code attached to each table. Lunch is limited to gukbap dishes, but in the evening they add a wide variety of dishes on top of the lunch menu.

We met for dinner, so true to a traditional tavern, we picked several dishes meant to pair well with traditional liquor.

Octopus tempura & potato dumplings (12,000 won)

First out were the octopus tempura and potato dumplings. I expected the potato dumplings to be gnocchi-like, but they were chewier and plainer than expected, and they paired well with the crispy octopus tempura.

I thought the sauce on top of the octopus tempura might be innards, but it was actually a laver (gim) sauce — savory with a hint of saltiness, good as an appetizer-style bite.

Dak-jeon, Korean chicken pancake (15,000 won)

Next came the dak-jeon I'd been looking forward to most. The outside was crispy and the chicken inside was tender, so it felt like eating a healthier version of fried chicken. Honestly, it was my favorite dish at Jumak Inho.

Red minari gukbap, rice soup with water dropwort (10,000 won)

Last, we ordered the red minari gukbap, which is also on the lunch menu. Minari gukbap comes in three versions — red, clear, and creamy-white — and we were torn between sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) and minari gukbap, but ended up going red since we were craving something spicy.

I expected something like yukgaejang or bone soup, but it actually had a spicy-yet-slightly-creamy quality, like a mala cream soup or a rosé sauce — pretty unique. Tasting the broth alone at first threw me off since it wasn't what I expected, but once I added the minari and rice, the fragrant minari flavor and texture came together and I kept going back for more.

Haechang 9-do, the makgeolli of a lifetime (23,000 won)

On top of it all, Haechang 9-do — often called the Hermès of makgeolli — finished clean with just a touch of sweetness, and it paired beautifully with everything. It's not an exaggeration to say it was the best makgeolli I've ever had, a true once-in-a-lifetime makgeolli. I hesitated seeing the ₩23,000 price tag, but it's absolutely worth it — I hope you get to try it.

By the way, the drinks menu marks carbonation, body, and sweetness levels in stages, which makes it much easier to pick something to your taste. That also makes it a meaningful spot to visit on a blind date or when you're still getting to know someone — you can learn their preferences together.

Is Jumak Inho in Gwangju worth a visit?

After a night out, I often end up with an upset stomach from greasy or heavy bar food, but Jumak Inho, a good-vibes bar near Geumnam-ro, left me satisfied with its clean, light flavors. On top of that, you can get drink and dish recommendations straight from the owner, which made it feel like a Geumnam-ro favorite I wanted to keep to myself.
