Chuncheon gravel campsite R8: riverview night at Urban Slow City

Fall has properly arrived. In early September, one weeknight evening when the summer heat had just broken and I was craving meat grilled outdoors, I had no choice but to book a campground.

I went on a fall camping trip to Urban Slow City, a Chuncheon campground that's hugely popular for water sports in summer. During the day, warm sunlight was still drawing plenty of visitors out for a swim. Standing in the river breeze looking out at the open scenery, I felt the everyday stress just melt away.

Urban Slow City is located in Nam-myeon, Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, so it's an easy drive even from the greater Seoul area. It took us about an hour and a half one way.

The moment we entered the campground, the wide-open Bukhangang River caught my eye, and with the grass and trees well kept, the first impression was a pass! The overall upkeep was tidy, which made it pleasant the whole stay.

Watching people enjoying water sports, I kind of regretted not bringing our own gear — but we'll save that for next year.

This place has fully equipped caravan and glamping facilities, so even people without camping gear can visit comfortably. You can come with nothing but yourself and still enjoy the full romance of camping, which makes the glamping and caravan options a great alternative for beginner campers who find gear intimidating, or families with young kids who'd struggle to pitch a tent.

Inside R8: the 8X8 gravel riverview site

The site we booked this time was R8, one of Urban Slow City's popular spots. R8 is a dedicated riverview site, looking straight out at the calm Bukhangang River across the way.

At 8X8 in size, it had plenty of room for a large living-shell tent or a tarp. The gravel floor was evenly laid too, so pitching stakes was easy, and even with rain the next morning, we could wrap up camp dry and comfortable. I didn't manage to capture it in photos, but the river mist and open river view that greeted me the moment I stepped out of the tent the next morning were really something.

The 24-hour self-serve store at Urban Slow City

The campground runs a store sized to match the scale of the site. And since it's unmanned and open 24 hours, you can pick up anything you need or any snacks without any time restrictions.

There's a claw machine the kids love and arcade games the adults love, so it's a nice spot for a laugh too. Our kid, who's currently obsessed with claw machines, couldn't stay away from the arcade area on every visit.

Snacks, instant rice, alcohol, and drinks are all well stocked, but there's no meat or vegetables — don't forget to shop for the main items before you come!

Free play facilities for kids

Another strength of Urban Slow City is that it's a fully kid-friendly campground. There's a grassy field with swings, a slide, and a trampoline area where kids can run around freely — all free to use and kept impressively clean.

In particular, there were two separate trampoline areas — one for preschoolers and one for elementary schoolers. Thanks to that age-based split, families with young kids could use them without worry.

Where are the washing sinks and showers?

The sinks, showers, restrooms, and recycling area are all clustered near the campground entrance. From R8, it's not super close, but since the restroom is also inside the store building at the center of the campground, I don't think there's a major inconvenience no matter which site you pick. Since you're out of the city for once, think of it as a nice bonus walk.

A quick shot of the shower room when no one else was around. Hot water runs from 6am to 10pm. They're individual private stalls, so you can wash up privately, and a hair dryer is provided so you don't need to bring your own.

Honest verdict on one night at Urban Slow City

My husband and I keep our camping budget-friendly using gear handed down from my sister, so there's a limit to how much of a moody atmosphere we can create — but as evening fell, pretty lights sparkled across the whole campground and completely flipped the vibe.

Even without much mood lighting of our own as camping beginners, the campground's own soft-glowing lights let us feel that romantic, atmospheric camping mood to the fullest.

Stars in the night sky, good camp cooking, and a quiet fire-gazing moment with family — that's a time you can't trade for anything.

The next morning we ended up grilling semi-dried squid in butter and a whole pile of makchang (grilled beef intestines) too. A breakfast menu only camping makes possible...

With natural scenery, atmosphere, and convenience all in one place, Urban Slow City in Chuncheon feels like a spot that satisfies everyone, whether it's a family trip or a couple's getaway. I plan to come back again before fall is over, for the ease and romance of that river view.
