Seongsu taco restaurant in Seoul with retro TVs upstairs: Morimoly

In short

Morimoly is a fusion taco restaurant in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, near Seoul Forest Station, with food cooked in an open kitchen on the 1st floor and served in a dining room on the 2nd. A couple split a garlic butter shrimp taco and a Morimoly taco (mains ₩12,900–16,900), comparing the crispy gimbugak-style (fried seaweed chip) shells and the rice inside, while old TVs upstairs played Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball for an 1980s–90s feel. Morimoly is not a traditional taco, but it is worth trying if you want a different kind of meal in Seongsu.

Visiting Morimoly, a Seongsu taco restaurant

Whenever we have a date in Seongsu, we always end up eating Korean or Western food. So I went looking for something a little different and found Morimoly (모리몰리), a spot getting a reputation as a Seongsu taco restaurant and a Seoul Forest taco restaurant!

What kind of taco restaurant is Morimoly?

Morimoly is a fusion taco restaurant on Seongsu-il-ro 3-gil, serving dishes that combine Korean ingredients with a Mexican feel. They often do pop-ups, so I'd gone and missed them a few times, which made me want to try it even more!

It's not an ordinary Mexican restaurant. It's a fusion style that mixes Korean ingredients and Mexican flavors in a new way, so if you want a different kind of taco, it's worth a visit.

Open kitchen on the 1st floor, dining on the 2nd

The shop is split over two floors, and in the open kitchen on the 1st floor you can watch the owner cook the food himself!

At first I was shocked, thinking, "Is this takeout only?!" Then I found out you can eat on the 2nd floor and felt relieved. The owner looked really hot standing at the stove all the time, but he was so kind, which I loved!

Thanks to that, we could also watch the food being made, and as you can see the kitchen is spotless. As someone with a sensitive stomach, that raised my trust a lot! haha

The 2nd floor also has strong air conditioning, so you can eat in the cool. I think it's worth a visit for anyone looking for a Seoul Forest taco restaurant!

Old TVs playing Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball

Best of all, old TVs were playing Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball, which instantly takes you back to the 80s and 90s!

How much are tacos at Morimoly?

Main dishes at Morimoly ran ₩12,900–₩16,900, which isn't a burden for a Seoul Forest taco restaurant. Places around Seongsu and Seoul Forest these days are pretty pricey, so I thought, "Hey, that's better than expected!" haha

On top of that, if you leave a Naver receipt review you get one free side dish. With little perks like that, I felt the value for money was decent overall :)

Rice inside a taco?

The Morimoly taco comes in a crispy fried shell like gimbugak (crispy seaweed snack) with rice inside, so I figured it might divide opinions. Until now, the tacos I'd mostly seen had just meat and vegetables inside a tortilla, you know?

Taco with rice in a crispy gimbugak-like shell

Honestly, at first I thought "rice in a taco?" and it felt strange. But looked at another way, it feels like a hearty, filling meal, so people who love rice will probably be satisfied.

Garlic butter shrimp taco

I'd come expecting a light, simple, traditional-style taco, so I was a bit thrown at first! But the shrimp in the garlic butter shrimp taco was plump, the wasabi-ish cream sauce served with it was clean and nice, and the crispy gimbugak-like taco was pretty good too. I think it's worth trying once as an unusual dish.

Morimoly taco (beef)

My husband said the beef in the Morimoly taco (a cut like shank, maybe?) tasted better than the garlic butter shrimp. The meat was tender and the portion generous, so I think it suits anyone wanting a filling meal.

In the end, rice and tacos didn't feel like a perfect match, but it was surprising that they worked at all. It's clearly a different style from the tacos I usually eat, so it's fine if you treat it as an unusual meal.
