Hyangtaek Cheonan Buldang Branch is a Korean restaurant in Buldang-dong, Cheonan, serving mackerel gondre rice and eggplant doenjang rice. Even a friend who dislikes eggplant cleaned the eggplant doenjang rice bowl, and the savory mushroom pancake made the meal filling. Hyangtaek is worth a visit for a date or a family meal when you want a neat, well-set Korean spread.
Donghae Bada Hoetjip is a sashimi and seafood restaurant on the main road in front of Segwang Apartments in Dujeong-dong, Cheonan. On a weeknight after work, two diners ordered the assorted sashimi and the seafood stew set for two, which brought seasonal mideoh (croaker) and tuna plus a stew loaded with blue crab and abalone, and the complimentary starters alone were enough to set a drinking table. With roomy parking front and back and a group room at the rear, Donghae Bada Hoetjip works well for both company dinners and family gatherings.

The vanilla blanc, matcha canelé, salted caramel financier and an iced americano made with Table Talk beans all travelled well as takeout, and the three pastries each had a completely different texture. The Sinbu 4 public parking lot directly in front of Brewers Coffee gives the first 30 minutes free, so driving there is easy.

The order was a salted caramel financier (₩3,500), a Dubai chocolate financier (₩4,000), a pistachio canelé (₩4,000) and a pecan espresso madeleine (₩3,500) with an iced americano, taken out and eaten in the car — and the madeleine's name tag turned out to be swapped. The financiers were crisp outside and moist inside, so Brewers Coffee is worth a stop if you want financiers in Sinbu-dong.

A family of four ordered the Songtan budae-jjigae for 4, served in a broth made with 1++ Korean beef mince and loaded with ham, sausage and meat, with free refills of rice and ramyeon noodles. Even with a family member who can't handle spicy food, the mild Songtan version made it an easy, filling place to eat together.
Bulnaneun Jjukkumi Yuryang Direct Branch is a stir-fried webfoot octopus restaurant on Yuryang Food Culture Street in Cheonan, Chungnam. The writer and her mom ordered the medium spicy stir-fry + hotpot rice + shrimp set for two at ₩34,000, enjoying shrimp tempura, fiery octopus stir-fry, and scorched rice tea to finish. Six years of visits later, the smoky flavor and generous portions haven't changed a bit, and this lunch was just as satisfying as ever.

On a third visit, I shared original spicy jjukkumi, shrimp tempura, and pot rice with my mom, mixing in plenty of self-service-bar vegetables and radish salad. Verdict: a satisfying place to revisit when you are craving something spicy.
Sijang Dakbokkeum is a chicken stir-fry stall inside Yesan Market in Yesan, Chungnam, where you take out shishito pepper dakbokkeum and eat it at the market plaza tables. The dakbokkeum with added cheese (₩3,000) and extra shishito peppers (₩2,000) on top of the ₩25,000 base had a sweet-and-spicy sauce with a gentle smoky flavor that worked with rice and with drinks alike. Sijang Dakbokkeum is a good pick when you want a different kind of chicken dish in Yesan Market's open-air plaza atmosphere.
