Bantiannyao Kaoyu Daejeon Branch is a Chinese braised fish (kaoyu) restaurant on the 2nd floor near Galleria Timeworld in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. The order was ningbo fish in green Sichuan pepper broth with a vegetable and mushroom side platter, rice paper wraps dipped into the hot broth to cook, plus Saero soju and the Chinese liquor Xueyuan. Bantiannyao makes a genuinely different meal when you are tired of the usual grilled-meat night out.

Dunsan-dong kaoyu restaurant with shrimp fish maw topping: Bantiannyao

Bantiannyao Kaoyu Daejeon Branch is a Chinese-style steamed freshwater fish (kaoyu) restaurant on the second floor across from Galleria Timeworld in Dunsan-dong, Daejeon. On a Friday night return visit with college friends who first fell for kaoyu in Shanghai, the writer ordered honghuajiao kaoyu and piled on toppings including shrimp-stuffed fish maw, then dipped everything in self-bar sauce (2,000 won per person) mixed with minced garlic; corkage is 10,000 won. The fish is tender and the toppings soak up the sauce as they simmer, which is why Bantiannyao keeps earning repeat visits.

Songrimbok Jangeo (송림복장어) Unlimited Eel Daejeon Direct Store is an all-you-can-eat freshwater eel restaurant near Goraedeul Intersection in Jijok-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. Visiting with parents, the writer grilled eel and chicken neck meat under the ₩29,900 adult all-you-can-eat deal for two hours and enjoyed a complimentary bokbunja (Korean black raspberry) wine on top. The eel was fresh, not frozen-and-thawed, with no odor and a chewy texture, and the spacious dining room with baby chairs made it easy for a family meal.

Galbitang with take-out option in Seo, Daejeon: Hanppong

Hanppong is a Korean restaurant in Seo-gu, Daejeon, right next to Dunsan Elementary School. The mountain-pile galbitang (short rib soup) came with four palm-sized ribs plus lean meat, and the milky-broth dogani-tang (beef knee cartilage soup) was packed with chewy cartilage. Galbitang can be packed to go either cooked or uncooked, so the writer even took a portion home for her dad.

Korean beef date night at a Daejeon Doan hanwoo BBQ: Worang Myeongga

Worang Myeongga Daejeon Doan Branch is a hanwoo (Korean beef) grill restaurant in Seo-gu, Daejeon, where you pick your cuts from a showcase at the entrance and grill them yourself over charcoal in a private room. On a dinner date with her boyfriend, the writer chose the mixed hanwoo platter, which came with a full spread of beef tartare, tripe, salted pollack roe, seasoned crab, beef soup, steamed egg, plus a self-serve bar for lettuce and fruit. The beef melted in her mouth fresh off the charcoal, and with so many private rooms, the place also suits group dinners.

Daejeon oil press shop, sesame and perilla oil set: Dangjin Gireumjip

Dangjin Gireumjip is a traditional oil press shop inside Taepyeong Market in Jung-gu, Daejeon, that presses and sells its own sesame oil and perilla oil. The writer bought a sesame and perilla oil set, saw the oil-pressing area in the shop, and confirmed the same-day production principle and the ₩40,000 reserve-and-visit price. For a household that uses perilla oil often, Dangjin Gireumjip is a good place to buy fresh and eat up quickly.

Daejeon fusion Korean restaurant near Sungsimdang for fried peppers with dangwi leaves: Usul

Usul is a fusion Korean restaurant near Jungangno Station in Jung-gu, Daejeon, about a 5-minute walk from the Sungsimdang main store. After a big Sungsimdang bakery haul, the writer ordered the gochujang yukhoe with yubu rolls (₩19,900) and the crispy fried peppers (₩9,900), and the dangwi (angelica) leaves served alongside the fried peppers were an especially thoughtful touch. Usul is a good stop when you want Korean food before or after bread shopping in Daejeon.
