Gangneung Korean restaurant with crab sundubu jjigae: Jeong Eunsuk

Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu is a Korean restaurant run by a certified Korean Cooking Master in the Chodang sundubu (soft tofu) village of Gangneung, Gangwon. The writer brought her father for the Chodang Deluxe Table, featuring crab sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew), tofu samhap (tofu trio), and seasoned grilled kodari (dried pollock), and he called it the best sundubu he's ever had. A polished, comforting spread that's perfect for taking parents out to eat.

Watermelon slushie and egg tart at Baegya Coffee, Gangneung

Baegya Coffee is a large four-floor bakery café right in front of Sacheonjin Beach near Gyeongpodae in Gangneung. On a day trip with my wife, we ordered an egg tart, a mini mocha butter pound cake, an iced Americano and a watermelon slushie, took in the ocean view from the 3rd floor, and explored the rooftop and the terraced 2nd floor, each with a different layout. The watermelon slushie, packed with real watermelon, was hands down the best watermelon drink I've had all year.

Gossi's Donghae Makguksu & Sundubu Kalguksu Main Branch is a Korean restaurant near Gangmun Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon, where diners can eat makguksu (buckwheat cold noodles) while looking out at the sea. Visiting with a baby, the writer ordered eolkeun sunkal (spicy sundubu kalguksu), bibim makguksu, flying fish roe gimbap and salad gimbap, and found the trip made easy by baby chairs on every floor, a baby spoon, and a microwave for warming baby food. The visit confirmed how much amenities matter when eating out with a baby.

Sokcho Haemul Kkot Jangkalguksu is worth a stop for anyone wanting a hearty, seafood-packed jangkalguksu in Sokcho.

Potato pancake brunch at Daecheongmaru, a Sokcho tofu restaurant

Daecheongmaru is a Chodang sundubu (soft tofu) Korean restaurant on Gwangwang-ro in Sokcho, Gangwon, with its own parking lot about 10 minutes by car from downtown. Arriving at 10am on a Friday for brunch meant no wait, and Sokcho Chodang sundubu at 14,000 won, Sokcho dried pollack hangover soup at 15,000 won and a potato pancake at 16,000 won were more than two people could finish. Daecheongmaru also hands out its homemade tofu lees for free, which makes it an easy stop on a Sokcho family trip.

Gangneung souvenir shop with cherry blossom sand boxes: Gangneung Sand

Gangneung Sand Main Branch is a souvenir dessert shop in Seonggok-dong, Gangneung, set in a white-and-blue five-story building with a café on floors one to three and the counter on the second floor. Looking for a Gangneung travel gift, I picked coffee-flavor and Chodang corn-flavor Gangneung Sand in a pink cherry blossom package, and each piece came individually wrapped, so it was easy to hand out. Gangneung Sand Main Branch is a safe, no-fuss choice for an affordable travel souvenir.

Sokcho gangjeong shop: two ₩10,000 take-home bags, Ibuja Mayak Gotgan

Ibuja Mayak Gotgan is a handmade grain gangjeong (crispy puffed-grain snack) shop in unit 137 on the first floor of Sokcho Central Market (Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market) in Sokcho, Gangwon. At the end of a Sokcho trip, the writer bought two ₩10,000 bags, each an eight-piece set, as a snack for her nieces; with little corn syrup, the gangjeong didn't stick to teeth and tasted less sweet, so the children ate it happily with milk. Ibuja Mayak Gotgan makes and sells the same day and ships by courier, which makes it an easy gift stop.

Large mixed sashimi platter takeout in Jumunjin Market: Minja Hoetjip

Minja Hoetjip is a takeout-focused sashimi restaurant inside Jumunjin Market in Gangneung, Gangwon. On a rainy Monday afternoon the large mixed sashimi platter (100,000 won) was pre-ordered and picked up, and the complimentary half-prepped spicy fish stew was simmered back at the lodging with only tofu added. The sashimi at Minja Hoetjip was very good, but if your room has a kitchen, the free stew is the part not to leave behind.

Sokcho soft tofu stew restaurant, two bowls compared: Jinsol Halmeoni

Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is a soft tofu stew (sundubu) restaurant in the Haksapyeong Kongkkot Village tofu street in Sokcho, Gangwon, run by the same family for three generations over more than 30 years. For an early breakfast, two friends ordered Chodang sundubu (12,000 won) and spicy seafood jjamppong sundubu (17,000 won) side by side, comparing the mild white tofu broth with the fiery seafood one, where the abalone kept a springy bite. Order the jjamppong seafood sundubu if you like heat, or the Chodang sundubu if you prefer it gentle.

30-second microwave potato bread in Sokcho: Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is a potato bread and snack bakery on Haksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon. On a family trip to Sokcho I took home squid ink bultan gamjabbang (burnt potato bread) and squid jjondeugi (chewy taffy snack), and microwaving the bread for 30 seconds the next day made the skin soft and chewy while bringing out more of the potato's nutty flavor. With room to browse at an easy pace, Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread is a snack stop that slots neatly into the middle of a Sokcho itinerary.

Chuncheon sushi buffet weekday lunch with crab cream pasta: QooQoo

QooQoo Chuncheon Branch is an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet on the basement floor of the CGV building near Toegye-dong and Seoksa-dong in Chuncheon, Gangwon. Arriving right at the weekday opening time of 11:30, the writer worked through sushi, smoked salmon, kebab meat grilled at the table, and seasonal dishes such as gamjatang (pork back-bone stew) fried rice, snow crab cream pasta and oysters on the half shell. Seats were roomy and turnover was fast enough that the cooked dishes tasted fresh, and QooQoo Chuncheon Branch is worth a return trip at dinner, when more ice cream flavors come out.
