Large mixed sashimi platter takeout in Jumunjin Market: Minja Hoetjip

In short

Minja Hoetjip is a takeout-focused sashimi restaurant inside Jumunjin Market in Gangneung, Gangwon. On a rainy Monday afternoon the large mixed sashimi platter (100,000 won) was pre-ordered and picked up, and the complimentary half-prepped spicy fish stew was simmered back at the lodging with only tofu added. The sashimi at Minja Hoetjip was very good, but if your room has a kitchen, the free stew is the part not to leave behind.

Sashimi to go in Jumunjin: the large mixed platter at Minja Hoetjip

Most people head to Jumunjin, next to Gangneung, to see the sea. And a lot of them pick up sashimi to eat back at their lodging.

We drove all the way to Jumunjin too, and by dinnertime I was craving sashimi. So we stopped by Minja Hoetjip (민자횟집) in Jumunjin Market and got a large mixed sashimi platter to go.

When we picked it up, they even threw in extra seafood, and the free spicy fish stew that came with it was insanely good — so let me tell you all about it!

What Minja Hoetjip looks like from the street

Exterior of Minja Hoetjip in Jumunjin Market on a rainy afternoon

It was raining, so I half-expected the place to be empty on a Monday at 4:30pm. Maybe because we arrived a bit early, or maybe because of the rain, it felt quiet and calm — almost like a scene out of a movie.

Minja Hoetjip is run entirely by women

You'll spot Minja Hoetjip right away — Compose Coffee is on the left as you enter, and a dried seafood shop on the right, walk straight in between.

One thing I noticed was that every owner working there was a woman — turns out a lot of the sashimi restaurants around this area are run by women.

Inside, there were also seats if you wanted to eat there.

The menu is pretty simple — it feels like they've kept only the popular items.

I've always gone to Noryangjin before, so I was curious what this would be like. I pre-ordered the large mixed sashimi platter for ₩100,000. Turns out even the large size comes in a few varieties — what we got looked like flounder plus a seasonal mix.

I also asked for the spicy fish stew, and they packed everything up neatly. The owners were so kind that picking everything up felt effortless.

What comes with a sashimi takeout order at Jumunjin Market — take the stew

Full sashimi takeout spread laid out at the lodging

Back at the lodging, we laid everything out. Vegetables, sauce, stew ingredients, bean sprouts, and the sashimi itself — it was a lot.

Fresh vegetables and sauce included with the takeout order

The vegetables were fresher than I expected, which I really appreciated. These little details matter, don't they?

Plate of the large mixed sashimi platter with extra seafood

Unwrapping the sashimi, it came generously packed with extra seafood too. I had asked in advance for salmon to be included, so keep that in mind if you order.

Half-prepped spicy fish stew ingredients as received

The spicy fish stew ingredients came half-prepped. They told us to just boil it as is, so we picked up some tofu at a nearby mart and simmered it briefly.

Once the stew was done, the whole spread was complete! This is exactly what a vacation dinner should look like. Haha, everyone was basically glowing with happiness.

How the salmon, flounder and olive flounder tasted

First, let's get to the sashimi I'd been looking forward to.

A piece of salmon sashimi held with chopsticks

The salmon was soft and moist. It had just the right amount of richness too, which was delicious.

A piece of flounder sashimi

The flounder was fresh with a nice chew to it.

A piece of olive flounder belly sashimi

I love salmon, but the top tier here felt like the olive flounder. The belly meat in particular had a subtle sweetness that was seriously impressive — I almost went back just to order more of it.

Sashimi being wrapped in vegetables

My parents loved wrapping the sashimi in vegetables, saying it hit a whole different level of flavor that way. Try it a few different ways yourself.

Gaebul (spoon worm) included among the seafood

The gaebul (spoon worm) was tasty too — a faint hint of ocean brine gave it its own distinct freshness. My sister loved it.

Spicy fish stew with bean sprouts and fish bones

Why the free spicy fish stew was the best part

And finally, we wrapped things up with the stew!

The stew wasn't salty at all — just a subtle, savory depth simmering underneath. The bean sprouts gave the broth extra depth, and the chili oil made it kalkomhan (a bit spicy and clean at once). They especially loaded it with fish bones, which gave the fish a chewiness that stood out.

If you're staying somewhere with a kitchen, I really recommend making sure the stew is part of your order.

Is Minja Hoetjip worth it for sashimi takeout in Jumunjin?

Dinner was so satisfying that my family even said this is exactly why people travel — for meals like this. Minja Hoetjip gave us that much happiness! Next time I'm thinking of ordering just a small size of olive flounder on its own. If you love olive flounder, it's worth a visit at least once.
